  • Southern Pacific Railroad Bridge - Redding CA
    $40,000 was expended by the federal government on the grading, paving, and structure of a bridge and its approaches over the Southern Pacific railroad on Eureka Way. The bridge is marked BR 6-35 on the railing at its northeastern corner.
  • Main Street Improvements - Willitts CA
    The federal Bureau of Public Roads gave a grant of $8,200 for the State Highway Department to grade and surface a half-mile portion of Main Street from Broaddus Creek to the North West Pacific Railroad tracks.  Main Street is part of the old Redwood Highway, which is was bypassed by the modern Highway 101 in the 1960s. 
  • Russian River Jetty Repairs - Jenner CA
    In the winter of 1933-34, the Civil Works Administration (CWA) provided relief labor for repairs to the jetty at the mouth of the Russian River at Jenner, California.  The CWA work was a minor contribution to a jetty construction project that had begun in 1929 and would continue off and on until 1948.  Funds were sought from the Public Works Administration (PWA) in 1938, but the State of California stepped in with money, instead. In brief, a jetty was built between 1929 and 1931, but was almost immediately damaged by waves and storms, so repairs continued to be made through 1935....
  • Pullen Park Pool and Bathhouse - Raleigh NC
    A swimming pool and bathhouse at Pullen Park in Raleigh, North Carolina were constructed as part of a federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression. (ncsu.edu) The current status of the facility is unknown to Living New Deal.
  • Public Utilities - Middletown DE
    Sanitary sewer, municipal waterworks, and power grid construction projects were all undertaken in Middletown, Delaware during the Great Depression, enabled by federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds. Work began in 1937. (PWA Docket No. DE W1021, X1031)
  • Sanitary Sewers - Dover DE
    A sanitary sewer construction project was undertaken in Dover, Delaware during the Great Depression with the assistance of federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds. (PWA Docket No. DE W1023)
  • Pacific Coast Highway - Mussel Shoal CA
    In 1935, the federal government dedicated $240,000 to the grading and paving of 3.6 miles of the old Pacific Coast Highway (now US 101) from Mussel Shoals in Ventura County to the Santa Barbara County line. The funds were probably channeled through the Bureau of Public Roads, but might also have come from the Public Works Administration (PWA).
  • Tulare Lindsay Highway - Lindsay CA
    A stretch of six miles of Tulare Lindsay Highway (Avenue 232) was widened and resurfaced with a federal grant of $25,000.   The money presumably came from the Bureau of Public Roads, but this has not been confirmed.
  • Post Office Mural - Robstown TX
    The mural "Founding and Subsequent Development of Robstown," installed in the lobby of the Robstown, Texas post office, was painted by Alice Reynolds in 1941.
  • Pumping Station (demolished) Improvements - Brooklyn NY
    The federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) undertook a sizable public building improvement project in Brooklyn, New York beginning in 1935.  The project involved the "Improvement of Public Buildings and Offices" at more than 30 locations, including the no-longer-extant water pumping station located at Ocean Parkway and Avenue V.
