  • Hornitos School - Hornitos CA
    The Works Progress Administration completed improvements for the Hornitos School. The work included the following tasks: "Brace building underpinning, etc., on property of Hornitos School District." WPA Proj. No. 65-3-3768, December 27, 1935, $2,027 Built in the 1860s to service a population of 15,000 during the height of the gold rush, the building was replaced with a newer cinder block building in 1980. It was eventually shut down 9 years later due to population decline.
  • Exchequer Grammar School (inundated) - Exchequer CA
    The WPA contributed $1,511 toward improvements for the Exchequer Grammar School. The work included the following tasks: "Improve school building lighting, leveling playground & building wall & frame." WPA Proj. No. 65-3-4630, February 8, 1936. Exchequer no longer exists. It was a mining town for the nearby Exchequer Mine and was serviced by the former Yosemite Valley Railroad. When the New Exchequer Dams height was raised in 1967 to increase the reservoir's capacity to 1,032,000 acre⋅ft, the town was inundated.
  • Woodrow Wilson School (demolished) Repairs - Charleston WV
    The Works Progress Administration completed improvements and repairs for the Woodrow Wilson School in Charleston. The work consisted of “painting and repairing.”
  • Mt. Bullion Elementary School Repairs - Mt. Bullion CA
    This one room schoolhouse in the mining town of Mount Bullion got help from the WPA on "Repair school building & excavate & level playground." WPA Proj. No. 65-3-4639, January 30, 1936, $1,287. The school was built in 1900 and operated until 1950. The building is currently used for storage.
  • El Portal Elementary School (abandoned) - El Portal CA
    Two separate WPA projects were initiated at this school that was built in 1930. Sponsor: El Portal Grammar School District WPA Proj. No. 65-3-3769, December 12, 1935, $2,567 "Painting inside walls, etc., on El Portal Grammar School." WPA Proj. No. 165-3-2074, December 11, 1936, $1,287, "Paint walls, window casings and make minor repairs to El Portal Grammar School, in El Portal, Mariposa County; also excavate and level school yard, repair road entrance and other work incidental thereto.   • Armory (demolished) Improvements - Somerville NJ
    The historic armory in Somerville, New Jersey was the recipient of WPA improvement efforts. As per project descriptions: "Improvements to Armory;" "Replacing concrete floor paint walls, replace plumbing fixtures and paint floors, in Armory." The structure, which was located on the east site of Grove St. between Main St. and High St., served from 1910 to 1999.

    The historic 113th Infantry Armory building in Passaic, New Jersey was the recipient of WPA improvement efforts. As per project description: "Improve 113th Infantry Armory Building, located at River Drive and Main Avenue." "The Armory Building served Passaic, and its now defunct, National Guard Unit, from the mid-twenties until the mid sixties, went it was demolished to make way for Route 21."   • Parlier High School Improvements - Parlier CA
    WPA Proj. No. 605-06-2-80. Total funds $1,480, September 10, 1938. "Improve grounds of the Parlier Union High School in Parlier, Fresno County, including constructing tennis courts, erecting fencing, and performing incidental and appurtenant work. Parlier Union High School District owned property. In addition to projects specifically approved. Average employed 24. Total Federal and Sponsor funds $3,794. Speaking with a facility member, he regretfully informed this researcher that the tennis courts had been removed about 9 years ago for the building of a new gymnasium.
  • Armory (former) Improvements - Trenton NJ
    The historic 114th Infantry Armory building in Trenon, New Jersey was the recipient of WPA improvement efforts. A 1930 map identifies the armory's location as the northwest corner of what was then the intersection of E. Front St. and Armory Dr. The fate of the building was detailed in a 1975 New York Times article: "A raging fire sent flames more than 100 feet into the sky destroyed the Trenton Civic Center early today. The building, a converted National Guard Armory, housed city offices and records. City officials were looking for room to accommodate 300 city employees who normally work in the Civic Center." WPA...
  • Camp Kilmer (former) Development - Piscataway / Edison NJ
    The Work Projects Administration (WPA) undertook development work at an unidentified location in or near New Brunswick, New Jersey. As two projects were sponsored by the War Department, Living New Deal believes these projects to be involved with the development of Camp Kilmer, an installation that straddled Piscataway and Edison, within two miles of New Brunswick. Rutgers University's Livingston Campus resides on part of the old Camp Kilmer site.
