Quality of Information: Minimal

This small linear school was constructed as a PWA project in 1937. It features two gabled ends with a carved rock symbol of a lamp of knowledge. It is very similar to other schools of similar size in Missouri and presently is a private residence.

There was a PWA built school addition within the Doniphan school campus built in the mid-1930’s, however there is no evidence of that older school.  Surrounding the current schools, however, is this well-built rock wall that retains the plaque indicating that it was built by the WPA from 1936-1937. Most of the wall is in very good condition.  Portions have been removed for construction purposes on the northwest side.

In December 1934, Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) labor was busy building two water conservation dams in Brown County northwest of Ainsworth. The dams were built on the farms of Mr. L. D. Crawford and Mr. Fred Wallenstein. Five additional dams were planned for other farmsteads in the Buffalo Flat section of the county. The applicant paid for materials and the labor was funded by the reemployment office.

This fire lookout tower outside Briar was a New Deal project completed in 1936. It was almost surely built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) under the direction of the US Forest Service, but that needs to be confirmed. The tower design is typical of the era. The Briar Lookout is intact, including a stairway extending to the ground. Access is restricted by a surrounding high chain link fence topped with barbed wire for safety reasons. It is one of the southernmost lookout towers in Missouri.

The tower is accessible about halfway up to an observation platform and is about 1 mile off of Hwy 67. Views from the platform are excellent in all 4 quadrants. There are no associated outbuildings.

The CCC built bleachers and a surrounding rock wall for Fredericktown's high school baseball diamond. The project features a tall rock wall with periodic columns for strength that is capped with concrete. It surrounds 3 sides of a large baseball field. One of the corners has a curved façade.

In December 1936, Mayor R. G. Kryger received word that the city’s proposal for a swimming pool had been approved by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
