  • Mississippi River Lock and Dam No. 11 - Dubuque IA
    From the National Register of Historic Places nomination file: "The 114.24-acre Lock and Dam No. 11 Historic District is made up of a navigation lift lock, a nonnavigable dam, and 37 associated resources. Two general contractors and numerous subcontractors, all employing the maximum number of people possible for a relief work project, built most of the main features of this district between 1934 and 1937. Eagle Point Bridge was already in place when this work began."
  • St. Mary's Playground - Brooklyn NY
    St. Mary's Playground in stretches along Smith St. between Huntington St. and Nelson St., and Nelson St. and Luquer St. in Brooklyn. It sits at the border of three neighborhoods: Gowanus, Red Hook and Carroll Gardens. The NYC Parks site explains the origin of the playground: "The two parcels of land for this park were acquired by the New York Department of Transportation in 1934 as part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s (1882-1945) Works Progress Administration’s urban revitalization initiative.     Town annual report: The following work has been done under projects, since April, 1934: Arlington Street from Newtown Road, widening and grading 3600 feet to December 27, using sixteen men, 1 foreman, four trucks from November 8 to December 27.
  • Hosmer St. Development - Acton MA
    Town annual report: The following work has been done under projects, since April, 1934: Hosmer St., from Mass. Ave., to School St., widening, straightening and grading 3,168 feet, using sixteen men, 1 foreman, four trucks, from April 5 to October 25. Fire protection water holes along the street were also constructed with F.E.R.A. labor.
  • Johnson Lake Trail - Great Basin National Park NV
    Lehman Caves National Monument was established in 1922 and put under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service in 1933. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) arrived in 1934, setting up a camp and going to work on improvements to make the monument more welcoming for visitors. One of their tasks was to construct part of the Johnson Lake Trail.  We have no information on what other trails the CCC enrollees built in the park. The monument was incorporated into a new Great Basin National Park in 1986.  
  • City Hall - Dover NH
    The historic and stately City Hall building in Dover, New Hampshire was constructed with the assistance of federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds. The PWA provided a $78.780 grant for the project, whose total cost was $302,847. The building, which was constructed between July 1934 and December 1935, is still in service. PWA Docket No. NH 6185.
  • Acadia School (former) - Madawaska ME
    The historic former Acadia School in Madawaska, Maine was constructed with the assistance of federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds. The building "began as a high school and after several years it was an elementary school. At one time it housed 250 eighth-graders." It presently serves as a suite of medical facilities. The PWA provided a loan of $67,000 and a grant of $26,558 for the school's construction; its total cost was $97,295. Construction occurred between Aug. 1934 and Apr. 1935. PWA Docket No. ME 4758.
  • Post Office - Houlton ME
    The historic United States Post Office and Custom House building in Houlton, Maine was constructed between 1934 and 1936 with federal Treasury Department funds. The building, which has been largely remodeled and expanded, continues to serve as the post office, in addition to other, including private, purposes.
