  • Tyson School (former) - Versailles IN
    The former Tyson School in Versailles, Indiana was constructed as a federal Public Works Administration (PWA) project. The facility has since been converted to apartments. Partially funded by and named in honor of a community benefactor who grew up in the town of Versailles (and by the way, the one in Indiana, is "Vur-saylz"). James Tyson was one of the founders of the Walgreen drugstore chain and also supported a library and an absolute jewel of an Art Deco inspired church. The Tyson Temple United Methodist Church is a memorial to Mr. Tyson's mother.

    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed U.S. 40 in Wayne County, Indiana from "Richmond to Ohio‐Ind. State line," an $25,837 project.
  • U.S. 41 - West Creek Township IN
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed U.S. 41 in Lake County, Indiana from "Jct. SR 2 to Cook," an $84,582 project. WPA Project No. 65‐1‐52‐2366
  • uabache State Park Dam & Lake - Bluffton IN
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) or Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), possibly both, completed the dam and Lake Kunkal in 1939. The 25 acre lake is impounded by an earthen dam. There are also concrete steps on dam's south face.
  • United States Penitentiary - Terre Haute IN
    United States Penitentiary Terre Haute was built between 1938 and 1940. The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce raised $50,000 to buy the land. The Public Works Administration largely funded the $3,000,000 cost for the facility. It took 125,000 person-days to build the main complex and another 25,000 person-days for the utilities and grounds.

  • Veedersburg Scout Cabin - Veedersburg IN

  • Vernon Gym - Vernon IN
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) built the Vernon Gym in Vernon IN. Originally K-12 school with a gymnasium. Now a community building offering classroom and studio space and the gymnasium.  
  • Versailles State Park Campground - Versailles IN
    The campground was completed by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) laborers in 1939. The campground consists of a main building, two restrooms, and four drinking fountains.
  • Versailles State Park Comfort Station - Versailles IN
    Works Progress Administration (WPA) workers completed the comfort station in 1939. The style of the building is classified as parks rustic.
  • Versailles State Park Group Camp - Versailles IN
    Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) workers completed this camp in 1934. The camp was occupied by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) workers in 1935. The camp consists of 14 sleeping cabins, a dining hall, restrooms, and a recreation building. The group camp is exceedingly rare, since most CCC living quarters were temporary and were removed after the CCC's departure. Furthermore, the remaining buildings appear to retain a high degree of architectural integrity. The style of the camp structures are classified as parks rustic.
  • Versailles State Park Shelter - Versailles IN
    Works Progress Administration (WPA) laborers completed the shelter, known today as the Oak Grove Shelter, in 1939. The shelter has two wings that are open pavilions. The structure was completed with stone and wood.

  • Washington Park Zoo - Michigan City IN
    The Washington Park Zoo is thought to be the only zoo completely designed and landscaped by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and its predecessor agencies (FERA – Federal Emergency Relief Administration, and CWA – Civil Works Administration.) It spans across 15 acres on a hilly sand dune in Michigan City, IN, close to the southeastern tip of Lake Michigan and to this day houses more than 220 animals of 90 different species from around the world.   • Wells County Public Library Improvements - Blufton IN
    This neoclassical building was first constructed in 1903, and was redecorated by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s.
  • Wicker Memorial Park - Highland IN
    The park includes a 232-acre tract of land owned by the township. Established in 1927 for use by township residents, it was renovated with funds and labor provided by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The clubhouse is one of the area's finest examples of period architecture.
  • William A. Wirt School - Gary IN
    The Public Works Administration funded the construction of a public school in Gary in 1939. The structure was altered with an addition in the 1960s.
  • Wilson Park Community Building - Bedford IN
    The National Youth Administration built the Wilson Park Community Building in Bedford IN. Originally a shelter house, now (2022) a community building, features high-quality stone work including a large fireplace visible in pictures on the City of Bedford web page.  
  • Wilson Park Entrance - Bedford IN

  • Wilson Park Shelter House - Bedford IN
    The National Youth Administration (NYA) built the Wilson Park Shelter House in Bedford IN. Originally picnic shelter, 2022 (apparently) storage building. The material and workmanship of New Deal projects in Bedford, Indiana is remarkable. The city is the center of the Indiana limestone industry the, for example, provided the stone for the Empire State Building. Even the "park rustic" projects show a high level of fit and finish that is a credit to local stone workers.
  • Windsor Halls - West Lafayette IN
    Construction of two of the Windsor Halls: Wood Hall and Shealy Hall, was enabled by Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) funds in the form of a $247,500 grant. The total project cost was $604,813. PWA Docket No. IN 1368.
  • Winklepleck Memorial Library Improvements - Odon IN
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) provided funds and labor for work on what is now known as the Winklepleck Memorial Library in Odon, Indiana.
  • Woodburn Hall (I.U.) - Bloomington IN
    Woodburn Hall was the first home of IU's School of Business (now the Kelley School of Business, located in Hodge Hall). Woodburn now houses the African Studies and Political Science departments. It  also contains two murals by Thomas Hart Benton.
  • WPA Outhouse (Jackson County History Center) - Brownstown IN
    This Works Progress Administration outhouse was relocated to the county historical society property. It was built in a shop, moved to the original site, and installed by WPA. WPA programs like the Indiana Community Sanitation Program directly affected an astounding number of people. WPA built 125,791 outhouses for the state of Indiana (paying $4 million in wages) and more than 2 million nationwide.
  • Yellowwood Lake and Dam - Needmore IN
    This earthen dam, impounding the 133-acre Yellowwood Lake, in Yellowwood State Forest, was completed in 1938 with funds provided by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
  • Yellowwood State Forest Ault Lake (Crooke D Creek Lake) - Belmont IN
    Lake impounded by earth dam on west. Documentation (mapsand plans on file in forest office) clearly indecates the dam was planned in the 1930s, but there is none to indicate that it was eventually constructed during this period not noted in annual reports nor mentioned in Outdoor Indiana), and may have been complated latal. Plans and maps are drawn in 1938. Planned, at least, under the complice of the Resettlement of administation as part of the Blossoom Land Utilization Project. Constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
  • Yellowwood State Forest Custodians Residence - Needmore IN
