  • Cazenovia Park Improvements - Buffalo NY
    Cazenovia Park and the nearby South Park in Buffalo were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in the late 19th century. Improvements to the park continued throughout the early 1900s. In 1935, the WPA built a pedestrian suspension bridge across a creek in the Cazenovia Park golf course. The WPA photo pictured here also shows a swimming pool listed as being "South Park Swimming Pool - Cazenovia Park." This may well be the swimming pool in Cazenovia Park, which was also constructed in 1935.
  • Onondaga Park Repairs - Syracuse NY
    The gazebo bandstand and pool in Upper Onondaga Park in Syracuse, New York were renovated by the Works Progress Administration. They remain in use to this day. Further information is needed about the exact time period of the renovation project.
  • Museum and Science Center Indian Arts Project - Rochester NY
    In 1936, with funding from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Vera Achen painted the background to an exhibit for the "Seneca Collection" at the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences (now the Rochester Museum and Science Center, RMSC). Most of the works produced for the project are still held at the museum's collections. More information is needed, however, to establish the status and exact location of Vera Achen's painting today. The WPA photograph caption states that the exhibit for which Achen painted the background, was intended to depict "a Seneca Indian village group" (WPA).     Malvin Gary Johnson painted two murals, "Nat Turner" and "Toussaint L'Ouverture" in 1934 with funds provided by the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP).
  • Park Shelter - Hubbard IA
    This stone park shelter in the small town of Hubbard, Iowa, was built by the WPA in 1939.
  • Midwood High School Mural - Brooklyn NY
    Abraham Joel Tobias completed the mural, entitled "Science," in 1942 with funds provided by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
  • Teddy Roosevelt High School Mural - Bronx NY
    Bertram Goodman completed this mural, entitled "Evolution of the Book," in 1936 with funds provided by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
  • Morris-Jumel Mansion Restoration - New York NY
    This house "was built in 1765 by Roger Morris, a British military officer, and served as a headquarters for both sides in the American Revolution" (wikipedia). It was declared a national landmark in 1961 and is now a house museum. The WPA photos pictured here show that the Jumel mansion was restored with New Deal assistance in the 1930s.
  • Laurel Athletic Field - Laurel NE
    In July 1935, the Laurel School Board sponsored a proposal for a new athletic field adjacent to the school grounds. The land had been used as a school “park”, but since the school had no athletic field to speak of, the Board proposed to procure 6,000 cubic yards of dirt from the nearby borrow pit of the State Highway Department and level the yard. Thirty men were given employment as a result of this Works Progress Administration (WPA) project.
  • Kearney Highway Shop - Kearney NE
    In May 1938, a storage yard and highway shed was under construction on 33rd Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Utilizing Works Progress Administration (WPA) labor, the building and completed site was estimated to cost $8000. One and one quarter acres of ground were fenced with six-foot wire mesh on steel posts set in concrete. A patrol shed, measuring 56 by 40 feet, with three large stalls for maintainer machines and trucks was built on the site. A repair shop and office space were located in the building as well.
