    The former grammar school auditorium in Denair, CA, was constructed from 1939-1940 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
  • Syracuse Municipal Airport Improvements (demolished) - Syracuse NY
    These WPA archive photos show WPA electricians, mechanics, and workmen installing a new power plant and field lights at Syracuse Municipal Airport. The airport closed down in the late 1940s.
  • Morgan Falls Campground - Chequamegon National Forest WI
    The CCC built a campground near Morgan Falls in the Chequamegon National Forest of northern Wisconsin. The campground flooded in 1946 and closed in 1960 due to over-saturation and unsafe camping conditions. Today, hikers and snowshoers can see fieldstone fireplaces, a well, and a round cistern along the trail that connects Morgan Falls to St. Peter's Dome, a granite outcrop offering views of Lake Superior.
  • Namekagon Lake Picnic Shelter and Campground - Chequamegon National Forest WI
    A partnership between the Forest Service and Works Progress Administration resulted in a rudimentary picnic shelter and campground at Namekagon Lake in northern Wisconsin's Chequamegon National Forest. Originally, the shelter had changing rooms at each end which were later removed. Today, the campground boasts 34 sites, a sandy beach, boat landing, and trails.
  • Mead Library - Buffalo NY
    Mead Library in the Lovejoy neighborhood of Buffalo, New York was constructed in the 1930s by the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA). "After the Erie County Library Board selected the Mead Library as one of several Buffalo branch libraries to be defunded and closed, the Lovejoy neighborhood and Councilmember Richard Fontana took steps to keep Mead open as a community resource. Today Mead continues to loan books, host weekly meetings of such groups as the Homemaker’s Society and offer free internet access, entirely through the work of volunteers.   • Baseball Diamond and Grandstand - Greene NY
    In 1936 the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) built a baseball diamond and a covered grandstand for the Greene Town Team in a park that is still referred to today as Ball Flats. Ball flats is a public recreation area "located next to the Chenango River within the Village of Greene...." (Greene Parks & Recreation). An article by the town historian notes that "In the 1930s there were so many strong left-handed batters (Harry Blakeslee, Bill Henninge, Charlie Gillette, Slim Barrows, Sanky Gibson among them) hitting the balls up to North Chenango Street, that they changed the layout of the field to what it...
  • Geysers Road Culvert - Cloverdale CA
    A culvert/rock chute on Geyser Road (east of Cloverdale California, Sonoma County) - "WPA 1940" inscribed on head walls on both sides of road.
  • Queens Borough Public Library Murals - Queens NY
    The Queens Borough Public Library features a number of murals completed through the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The murals are: A. Grant Arnold's "The Big Maple Tree" (1936), Philip Cheney's "12th and Market Sts., Phila." (1936), Louis Lozowick's "Night Repairs" (1939), Nan Lurie's "Next" (1937), Elizabeth Olds's "Pittsburgh" (date unknown), and Raphael Soyer's "Portrait of a Man (A Transient)" and "Working Girls Going Home" (both 1936). The location and status of these works is presently unknown to Living New Deal.
  • Buffalo Zoo Animal House Improvements - Buffalo NY
    Works Progress Administration (WPA) laborers constructed and renovated animal houses in the Buffalo Zoo. WPA improvements at the Buffalo Zoo included work on the Sea Lion house and pool (shown above), and construction of new pens for the Sika and Fallow Deer (shown below). More information is needed to determine the current status of these projects.
  • Jordan-Elbridge Middle School Tennis Courts - Jordan NY
    The New Deal constructed tennis courts for what was then Jordan High School and is now the Jordan-Elbridge Middle School.  The agency in charge was almost surely the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which built thousands of recreational facilities at schools across the country.   This needs to be verified.
