Completion Year: 1941

These four post office murals were commissioned by the Department of the Treasury's Section of Fine Arts. Painted by Henry Schnakenberg, they were installed in 1941. The murals are titled “Indians Trading with the Half Moon,” “Washington at Fort Lee,” “Moving Pictures at Fort Lee,” and “The Present Day.”

This New Deal post office opened mid-1941.

The Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House was constructed in 1902-1907. In the 1930s and early 1940s, federal funding was used to make several improvements to the building, including the addition of a copper apron to the dome in 1933; improvements to the elevators in 1937; and the installation of revolving doors at the Bowling Green entrance in 1941. The building now serves as the New York branch of the National Museum of the American Indian, a part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

The court house and post office was constructed in 1895 and an addition was added in 1932. In 1941, federal funding supplied the building with a new elevator.

This glazed terra cotta relief entitled "American Oriental Rug Weaving" was created with  Section of Fine Arts support in 1941 by artist Ruth Nickerson. Originally installed in the Leaksville NC post office at 634 Monroe St. In the 1950's, Leaksville and 2 other towns combined to form the city of Eden. The old Leaksville post office station was closed around 1991 and the relief moved to the new Eden post office.

The mural "Prairie Fire" was commissioned by the federal Treasury Section of Fine Arts. The tempera work was completed by Ethel Magafan and installed in the lobby of the historic Madill post office in 1941. It is still visible today.

This canvas mural "The Battle of Kings Mountain" by Verona Burkhard was painted in 1941 with Treasury Section funding for the town's post office. It was moved to the city hall in the 1980s.

The museum contains four murals by Xavier Gonzalez: "Pioneer Saga," "Music of the Plains," "Contemporary Youth" and "Drilling for Oil." They were painted with Treasury Section of Fine Arts funds in 1941 and moved from the post office to the East Texas Oil Museum in 1999.

The mural "Daily Bread" -- currently on display at the Algona Public Library -- was completed with New Deal funds in 1941. The painting by Francis Robert White, formerly in the Algona Iowa post office, moved to the Algona Public Library. When the library was being remodeled, the mural was relocated to the Algona City Hall, where it is on display in the Algona city council chambers. City Hall is located at 112 W.
