  • Rock County Courthouse - Bassett NE
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) built the Rock County Courthouse in Bassett, Nebraska. Built in 1939-1940, the courthouse design features Art Deco elements. The architect of record was E.B. Watson. The WPA contributed $33,000 to the initial construction. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
  • Buchanan County Courthouse - Independence IA
    The Public Works Administration funded the construction of the Buchanan County Courthouse in Independence IA. The structure is designed in symmetrical PWA Moderne style in buff-colored brick. It is three stories over a full basement. The dedication took place on May 22, 1940 and attracted 4000 people. The building was designed by Dougher, Rich, and Woodbum of Des Moines, an  Iowa architectural firm that designed several PWA-funded public buildings, The courthouse was listed with the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. It is still in use.

    The Works Progress Administration built sidewalks on Talbot St. in Albany CA in 1940.
  • Sheridan County Courthouse - McCluskey ND
    Unusually, the Work Projects Administration (WPA) was involved with the construction of the gorgeous Art Deco courthouse for Sheridan County in McClusky, North Dakota. Approved in 1938, the ~$88,000 building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which reported that the building was "the only state WPA project constructed totally of monolithic concrete."
  • Sidewalks - Hawley MN
    The Work Projects Administration (WPA) conducted the following work in Hawley, Minnesota: "A total of 7,736 feet of sidewalks have been completed here by WPA workmen, in addition to driveway, curb and catch basin installation."
  • Road Paving - Bowman ND
    The Work Projects Administration (WPA) paved five blocks of streets in Bowman, North Dakota in a project completed in Oct. 1940.
  • Post Office Mural - Ware Shoals SC
    The historic post office building in Ware Shoals, South Carolina houses an example of New Deal artwork: "American Landscape," a Treasury of Fine Arts-commissioned mural by Alica Kindler. The work was installed in the post office lobby in 1940.
  • Post Office Mural - Columbus MS
    The historic New Deal post office in downtown Columbus, Mississippi houses an example of New Deal artwork: a Treasury Section of Fine Arts mural entitled "Out of the Soil," which was completed in 1940. The oil-on-canvas work, by Beulah Bettersworth, is still housed in the lobby though it's now shielded by plexiglass.
  • Post Office - Carthage MS
    The historic post office in Carthage, Mississippi was built in 1939-40 with Treasury Department funds. The stately building, which houses an example of New Deal artwork, is still in service.
  • Post Office Mural - Livingston TN
    The historic post office in Livingston, Tennessee houses an example of New Deal artwork: "The Newcomers," an oil-on-canvas mural painted by Margaret Covey Chisholm in 1940. The work was commissioned by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts.
