• Holliday Lake State Park - Appomattox VA
    The area encompassing Holliday Lake State Park and the surrounding state forest was cleared in the 1800s for farmland. In the 1930s, the federal government, through the Resettlement Administration, began buying the farms to return the land to its former productive hardwood forest status. Construction of a dam was begun at Fish Pond Creek; however efforts were relocated to Holliday Creek where a lake could be developed.   • Crescent City Hall - Crescent OK
    "Crescent City Hall is located at 114 W. Monroe in downtown Crescent, OK. This is a city with a population of approximately 1400, about 30 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. This is a red sandstone building, constructed in 1939, during the heyday of the Work Projects Administration. During the period 1935 to 1943, the WPA employed over 8 million people in the constructing of buildings, bridges and other structures across the United States.   • Davenport Cemetery Chapel - Davenport OK
    "Davenport Cemetery is a Town-operated cemetery, 1.25 miles west of town off Route 66, on 3490 Road. The cemetery has graveled driveways forming a circle with north-south and east-west bisecting drives. At the center of the cemetery, at the intersection of these crossed drives stands a rock chapel, constructed by the WPA in 1939. This is a one-room chapel which contains wooden benches and an altar.   • Gem County Courthouse - Emmett ID
    This art deco courthouse in Gem county Idaho was built by the PWA in 1938-39. Architect Frank Hummel designed the building. A National Register of Historic Places report describes the courthouse design: "The Gem and Washington county buildings use the bas relief ornament typical of Art Deco in a highly classical fashion. In them the vertical pier of Art Deco becomes a shallow pilaster with a stylized capital."
  • Harding County School Auditorium (demolished) - Buffalo SD
    This building was part of the Harding County High School in Buffalo, SD, until its demolition at some point between 2013 and 2016. This small school serves the entire county, for all grades, and has a total enrollment of less than 200. A National Parks Service, National Register of Historic Places document explains the school's New Deal history: "The stand-alone gymnasiums and auditoriums erected by the WPA as additions to schools underscored the importance of these amenities to the community schools.   • Angeles Crest Highway - Los Angeles CA
    "When Franklin D.Roosevelt was elected in 1933, his Works Progress administration (WPA) put Pasadenans to work on park, flood control,and utility projects.They improved Brookside Park for the Chicago White Sox,who set up spring training there.The most momentous WPA project was the Arroyo Seco Parkway, started in the late1930’s to link Pasadena with Los Angeles.Another noted road was the Angeles Crest Highway, which snaked into the San Gabriel Mountains and reached Chilao (beyond Mt.Wilson) by 1939."   (www.pasadena.edu)
  • City Hall - Picayune MS
    The Picayune City Hall was built by the WPA in 1938-39. It was built as an exact replica of an English Manor House. The architect, Wilford Lockyer, who was originally from England, ordered the metalwork, hardware, railings, and banisters from the manufacturer in England and had them shipped to Mississippi (Stockstill). Wilford S. Lockyer was employed by the Federal Government for CWA in 1934, PWA in 1935, and WPA from 1935-1940. City Hall was WPA project 4343, built for a cost of $43,000. The building was renovated and refurbished in 2013.
  • City Park Swimming Pool (demolished) and Pool House (former) - Concordia KS
    The WPA pool and building pictured here was voted in in 1936 and completed in 1939.  The pool was closed and filled in in the 1970's. There is now a basketball court where part of the pool was.  The pool house building is now a shelter house at City Park.
  • Civic Center Fair Barn - Horton KS
    This Fair Barn/Civic Center in Horton, Kansas was constructed by the WPA in 1937-39. W.O. "Tutes" Thomas was the designer and head of construction. The building is still in use for municipal functions and celebrations.
