Survival: No Longer Extant

The historic former U.S. Border Inspection Station (and attendant garage facility) on State Route 1 in Porthill, Idaho was built in 1938 with U.S. Treasury Department funds. Living New Deal believes the structure has been demolished and replaced with a newer facility.

"Designed by O. J. Munson and funded by the WPA/ FAP and a gift from the Class of 1937, the Band Shell was located where Bessey Hall now stands (see map). As captured in this 1954 photograph of a performance of the Michigan State College Band, the open-air stage was frequently used for musical performances as well as commencement ceremonies and pep rallies."

"In 1934, Wylie Apte accepted their offer and became the manager of the airport operations at the White Mountain Airport. Wylie persuaded the White Mountain Airport Corporation to clear away the trees so that he could taxi near the highway, and in 1935 a WPA project cleared off the stumps and enlarged the runway to 1,500 feet (460 m)." The WPA also constructed a hangar at the airport. No longer in operation, the airport is no longer extant.

Fort Douglas was expanded during the New Deal by the PWA, CCC and WPA.  The WPA added several homes for senior officers (buildings 621-625 on the central parade grounds, along De Trobriand Street) and non-commissioned officers (buildings 658, 600, 664, 665, 666 on Connor Road), along with entrance columns.  These are all still in use. There are several other WPA works at Fort Douglas that are harder to document or have disappeared:  a recreation building (pictured), swimming pool (filled in?), a gas station (modified from an earlier stone building that still stands), and improvements to the water and street systems (invisible). The North Texas State College's Home Management House was constructed with federal Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) funds. The P.W.A. provided $11,250 for the construction of the building, which was located at the northeast corner of what are now S. Welch St. and W. Chestnut St. The building has since been demolished. "Home Management House was a two story, brick veneer duplex that faced west on Avenue A with West Chestnut Street on the south. A since-demolished hospital at what was then North Texas State College received an addition constructed with federal Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) funds. The P.W.A. provided $11,000 for the project, which was dedicated on April 27, 1937. The location was the northwest corner of what are now Union Cir. with S. Welch St. .

The North Texas State College's Orchestra Hall was constructed with federal Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) funds. The building (also known as Music Hall), which was located at Chestnut St. and Ave. C, has since been demolished and replaced. The P.W.A. contributed $40,000 toward the project, which was dedicated on April 27, 1937. "PWA funds made it possible for UNT to provided better academic and residential facilities. In 1936 a new band and orchestra hall was constructed using a PWA grant and a bond issue from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. “Protestant Cay residence, St. Croix. The reconstruction of this attractively located and interesting structure was completed except for certain minor details and except for the reconstruction of adjacent outbuildings. This residence will be made available as quarters for an officer of the government of the Virgin Islands.” The work was executed by the WPA and cost $ 6,000.

The original Texas Woman's University "Demonstration School served the teaching students of the University's College of Education as a means of gaining practical experience. The original building was erected at the southeast corner of Bell Avenue and Texas Street in 1941. In 1959 a new Demonstration School building was built north of the TWU golf course. The original building became home to the Department of Occupation Therapy." Since demolished, the building was constructed with the assistance of $30,000 of Work Projects Administration (W.P.A.) funds / labor.

The former Texas Woman's University gymnasium was constructed with the assistance of Work Projects Administration (W.P.A.) funds and labor. Located at the northwest former of N. Bell Ave. and Administration Dr., the W.P.A. contributed $40,000 toward the project.
