• University of Mississippi: Sigma Alpha Epsilon House (demolished) - University MS
    "Congress granted permission for universities to use Works Progress Administration funds for fraternal housing. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon House, occupied in the fall of 1935, was the first built on Fraternity Row after the ban on fraternities and sororities was lifted. It burned in 1953" (Walton, 2008, p. 160).
  • Benjamin G. Humphreys Bridge (demolished) - Greenville MS to AR
    The US 82 bridge between Greenville, Mississippi and Lake Village, Arkansas was constructed to increase access between the two states to benefit economic development in the Delta. It was dismantled and replaced in 2011 due to increased river traffic, which resulted in numerous hits to the bridge over the years, and increased vehicular traffic which resulted in traffic control issues due to the narrow lanes and lack of shoulders. The Reconstruction Finance Corporation lent $2.55 million toward the cost of the original bridge. WPA funds were secured in 1938 for the remainder.   • High School Gymnasium (demolished) - Newcastle TX
    On January 28, 1936, consideration was given to building a gym as a WPA project at Newcastle.  On February 2, 1936, the school board committed a matching $3, 800 to build the gym.  Local WPA employee A. C. Duckett was assigned as the project superintendent. The gym was demolished in 1993.  Alumni erected a pavilion in its location, and a monument to the gym, although they incorrectly list the construction date as 1931.  Rocks from the old gym building were preserved in the sidewalk leading to the pavilion.  The 1936 date is consistent with Mr. Wooldridge’s account of the construction, also...

    A project grant of $20,000 supported the construction of an Olympic-sized swimming pool west of the gymnasium in July 1936.

  • Montana School for the Deaf and the Blind - Great Falls MT
    The predecessor to the Montana School for the Deaf and the Blind was founded in Boulder, MT the late 1800s. The school served deaf, blind, and "feeble-minded" children. As the school -- and particularly its "feeble-minded" student population -- continued to expand during the early 1900s, the Montana's state legislature "voted to segregate the departments of the deaf and the blind from the department of the feeble-minded" (MSDB—A Short History).     1 of 27 schools in Pasadena CA that the New Deal was involved in rebuilding, demolishing, or reinforcing after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake. 5 photos available at the Pasadena Museum of History depict the demolition of the school by the WPA and 1 photo depicting a PWA contractor starting excavation for the new structure. Listed as "Project #1 B3 225" "Garfield school demolition was started by February 1, 1935. The school building proper was practically demolished by March 5th, 1935.
