    The bridge carrying Fisher Road across Roaring Brook in Glastonbury, Connecticut was constructed by the W.P.A. in 1939.
  • Bandelier Elementary School - Albuquerque NM
    This large elementary school is in the Nob Hill section of Albuquerque, NM, just south of the University of New Mexico and has one of the highest ratings in the city. It was built by the PWA in 1939. The interior includes the typical glazed brick wainscoting in hallways. The exterior style includes modern deco elements mixed with a short visible clay tile roof and dentilwork below the fascia. Brick is the predominant exterior building material. The building is still in use.
  • University of Hawaii at Manoa: Miller Hall - Honolulu HI
    "Miller Hall, originally known as the Home Economics Building, was built in 1939 and formally opened with a ceremony on March 15, 1940. The architect of the building was John Mason Young, a professor of engineering at the University. The building’s contractors were Walker and Olund and the overall cost of the construction was $68,000. In addition to Territorial Funds, federal funds were provided by the Public Works Administration totaling $34,000."
  • South Seattle Playground Improvements - Seattle WA
    In 1939 and 1940, WPA workers made several improvements to the South Seattle Playground, beginning with the demolition of the four-story former South Seattle School building, which had closed in 1932 but remained on the site. Much of the brick from the old school building was reused by WPA workers to build a shelter house for the playground in 1939. The following year, workers re-graded the south half of the field. The playground and shelter house were demolished as part of the South Seattle Industrial Park urban renewal project in the late 1960s.
  • Auditorium and Gymnasium - Saint Jo TX
    A combination auditorium/gymnasium was constructed at Saint Jo, Texas by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1939. When finished, the building was to be 72 x 100 feet. The auditorium was to be 72 x 85 feet. It had a seating capacity of 1500 with 500 additional in bleachers. A 100 square foot stage was at the north end. Showers were installed at either end of the stage and dressing rooms and lockers were in the basement beneath the stage. The 13 1/2 inch walls were of concrete block with a four inch brick veneer to match the existing school....
  • Bath House - Eufaula OK
    This charming stone bathhouse, built by the WPA in 1939, is still in use, with some slight alterations. A 1985 Oklahoma Landmarks Survey of WPA projects in the state describes the structure in detail: "This bathhouse was originally a single-story structure, but now has two levels. It is a rectangular (55' x 25') building constructed of uncut native stone of auburn and buff colors in masonry of random rubble. The roof is gabled.   • Kellyville Elementary School - Kellyville OK
    In 1939, the WPA built a school and gymnasium in Kellyville, OK. A 1985 Oklahoma Landmarks Inventory surveyed the site and gave the following description of the school: "This large school of ten rooms or more is a single-story, rectangular (94' x 223') building constructed of uncut and beaded native stone of auburn and buff colors.   • Brady Creek Bridge - Brady TX
    The Brady Creek Bridge is a 270 foot long, 50 foot wide steel stringer bridge that carries US Highway 377 (also called N Bridge St) across Brady Creek in Brady, Texas. Jensen Construction Co. Inc. built the bridge in 1939 under the supervision of the Texas Highway Department and the Public Roads Administration of the Federal Works Agency.
  • Post Office - Ashland MA
    The post office in Ashland, Massachusetts was constructed with federal Treasury Department funds. The building, which was constructed in 1939 and houses an example of New Deal artwork, is still in service.
