  • Post Office - Piggott AR
    The historic post office in Piggott, Arkansas was constructed in 1937-8 with funds provided by the Treasury Department. Louis A. Simon served as the supervising architect and Neal A. Melick was supervising engineer. The building also houses an example of New Deal artwork: a mural entitled "Air Mail," in the lobby. The mural was featured on a sheet of U.S. postage stamps: "Post Office Murals." The First-Day ceremony for the stamps was held in front of the Piggott post office on April 10, 2019.
  • Mt. Madonna CCC Camp - Almaden CA
    This camp was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers for training and occupied by the 450th Company, P-234 October 15, 1937 near the old quicksilver mines of Almaden at the site of the ghost town of English Camp. Work projects accomplished by the 450th included construction of truck trails, telephone lines, bridges, lookout towers, fire prevention landscaping, spring development and rock walls.   • Dormitory Improvements - Hattiesburg MS
    The Demonstration School was re-roofed by Gordon Van-Tine Company, and three dormitories were repaired and improved through PWA funds at Mississippi State Teachers College. Oden and Glenn were contractors, making general repairs and installing new toilets and bathroom facilities. Rear porches were screened, tile floors and marble bathroom walls were added to each of the six bath compartments in each of the two bathrooms per floor. The projects were funded for a total of $78,000.
  • Camp Salt Creek - Three Rivers CA
    Located on the outskirts of the Sequoia National Park, Camp Salt Creek was constructed on October 12, 1937 by Company 5449, SNP-10. The type of work done at Camp Salt Creek was fire prevention, construction of horse and truck trails, highway maintenance, & building and maintaining communication systems. Company 5449 of note captured 117 rattlesnakes that were sent to the Biological Survey in Washington DC. The Company was originally formed in May 1936 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.   • Public School - Trent TX
    The Public Works administration funded the construction of the public school in Trent TX. There is a metal plate with 1937 mounted on the facade, but it only mentions the Board of Trustees. Metal walls have been added to the building. Excerpt from the Abilene Reporter-News, 01 Dec 1937: "TRENT. Dec. 1. (Spl) -Contract for construction of Trent's new- school plant--a $26,000 project with half of that amount a Public Works administration grant--was awarded here yesterday to the Balfanz Construction company of Abilene.   • Ruddick Park - Colorado City TX
    There are multiple facilities in the park - an amphitheater with a NYA marker 1937-38, an unmarked 2 room community center dedicated in 1939 (newspaper article), two park entrance gates, retaining walls with steps, picnic tables and benches, a covered picnic area, and a bathhouse for the swimming pool. While only the amphitheater and community center have documentation, I believe the other items are also the work of the NYA.
  • Redwood Road - Oakland CA
    In 1937-38, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) improved and paved the old dirt Redwood Canyon Road as part of the New Deal's contribution to the newly-created East Bay Regional Parks (EBRPD).  Today, it is known simply as Redwood Road. The road descends from Skyline Boulevard (also built by the WPA) to the entrance of Redwood Regional Park in the canyon below. Skyline, in turn, runs north to link up with Sibley, Temescal and Tilden Parks, the rest of the original four parks in the EBRPD system.     The Works Progress Administration built a school addition and gymnasium in Carnegie, OK. Contributor note: "Facing State Highway 58 (S. Carnegie Street) is a pre-WPA school building now called The Memorial Building, which serves as a community center. On the south side of this school, a classroom extension has been added. A change in the color of the brick differentiates where this addition was added. Windows on the south side of this addition are set in triples.   • Corona Heights Playground (Peixotto Playground) - San Francisco CA
    Tennis court and playground construction along 15th Street beginning with cliff shoring, earth-moving work atop Corona Heights (once called Red Rock Hill), photographed on Jan 21, 1937. The flattened areas just north of the hill's summit rock outcrop and high above the playground were created by this effort. Photo marked "To Level Off Hill to Prevent Slide – City and WPA officials have taken steps to level the crest of Red Rock Hill (sic) to prevent tons of dirt from rolling down on houses pictured under the cliff here."     "The Kern Mosquito & Vector Control District is an independent district formed pursuant to the California Health and Safety Code, Section 2000 et seq. The District was formed in 1916, but began control operations in August of 1917 and was originally named the Dr. Morris Mosquito Abatement District. Dr. Morris was a well-known local physician and County Health Officer who was responsible for initiating the formation of the District. The original District encompassed 48 square miles and its objective was to control mosquitoes and malaria along the Kern River and its sloughs."
