Description
William E. L. Bunn painted this oil on canvas mural, entitled “Peony Festival at Hamburg,” in 1941 with funds provided by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts. “The original mural was destroyed during renovations in the 70s. In 1999, Tony Rajer’s art class at the University of Wisconsin painted a replica for the new post office.” (newdealartregistry.org) It is viewable in the lobby.

I am quoting from America: A History in Art, by W.G. Scheller:
“Section [Treasury Section of Painting and Sculpture, later known as the Section of Fine Arts] muralists William E. L. Bunn and Bertram Adams were proteges of Grant Wood (known to all for his iconic American Gothic farm couple). When Wood was not available for the Dubuque, Iowa, post office mural, that commission was split between Bunn and Adams. The Hamburg, Iowa, post office mural was Bunn’s own, and he also made murals for post offices in Nebraska and Kentucky.”
