Description
Abilene’s historic Federal Building was constructed as the U.S. Post Office and Court House during the Great Depression. It was constructed with Treasury Department funds between 1935 and 1936. The building is still used by various federal agencies.

Listed on the NRHP in 1992. Information on the NRHP Nomination Form stated “On March 22, 1935 Mayor C.L. Johnson broke ground for the new federal building, designed by local architect David S. Castle. The A. Smith Company of Chicago, Illinois served as general contractor and built the building for $267,500. The Federal Building opened in 1936 and is still used today. “
