Description
This high school gymnasium was constructed in Antelope, Texas during the Great Depression with the assistance of the Works Progress Administration. In addition to the native stone structure, the construction project included a septic tank, disposal field, and improved school facilities and employed approximately 20 laborers. $13, 622 of the total cost of $21,393 was provided by WPA while the local school district provided the remainder.

I regret to inform you that the antelope gym has been torn down due to dilapidation and danger to community.
There are rocks on the site available for salvage.
My husband played many games in that gym, and roller skated too.
My in-laws enjoyed the gym when it was first built. It was beautiful. .
So sad.
This is sad, but probably inevitable, news. So many of the beautiful old gyms around the state are doomed to the same fate. My new book – Historic Gyms of Texas: A Tribute to Our Vanishing Heritage – will be out in February, I hope. There is a feature on the Antelope Gym.
