    A former school building in St. Vrain, New Mexico was constructed as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. A local resident informed ghost town photographer Beata Olszowka in 2017 that the structure in the featured image was the school gymnasium. The structure can be found west of Main Street, several hundred feet north of U.S. 60/84.
  • School (former) - Taiban NM
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) conducted school construction / extension / improvement work in Taiban, New Mexico. In 1935 the WPA allocated $2,367 for schoolground improvements at the school in Taiban. WPA Official Project No. 65-85-325. The community no longer maintains a school and the structure is no longer extant. Beata Olszowka reports: "The site of the former school in Taiban, NM is located behind the Presbyterian church," which is located at the northern end of Munger Avenue.     Living New Deal believes this structure to be originally one of several similarly designed school buildings built in the area in 1934-5 as part of a New Deal project. Their construction was enabled by the federal Public Works Administration (PWA), which provided a $178,140 loan and $56,289 grant, effectively covering the entire $230,491 total project cost.     A former school building in Villanueva, New Mexico was constructed as a W.P.A. project. According to a book written in 2012, "community desirous of making school into a community center." The location and status of the building are presently unknown to Living New Deal.
  • School (former) - Wahalak MS
    Public Works Administration project W1155 was a $2000 loan and a $1629 grant for a school, approved 11/14/1935. The first contract was awarded 12/14/1935 and construction began 1/22/1936. Wahalak was completed 8/5/1936. The school was consolidated with the Scooba school in 1949, and it was reported the former school was converted to a private home.
  • School (former) - Watrous NM
    A former school building in Watrous, New Mexico was constructed as a W.P.A. project. The structure was demolished ca. 2008.
  • School (former) - Wayside TX
    A school construction project in Wayside, Texas, likely construction of the school on Farm to Market Road 285 just west of town, was undertaken in 1936 with Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) funds.     Public Works Administration project 5288 funded the Woodland school with a loan of $8700 and grant of $3300, approved 3/21/1934. Construction of the one-story, brick building began 10/29/1934 and was completed 3/9/1935. The school closed in 1986 and sold the building and property. It was purchased by a local family and since then has been in use as the Woodland Furniture Store.

    A former school building in Pleasant Hill, New Mexico was constructed as a W.P.A. project. The location and status of this site are presently unknown to Living New Deal.

  • School (former) Improvements - Amherst OH
    The Civil Works Administration (CWA) provided labor to undertake numerous municipal improvements in Amherst, Ohio, among which was painting the community's historic school building. CWA workers also repaired desks and bathroom fixtures. The former school building is located at the northwest corner of Franklin Ave. and Church St.
  • School (former) Improvements - Cleveland VA
    The Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA)'s "constructive project work" in Russell County, Virginia included "improvements of the entrance to Cleveland school." A historic map suggests that the school was located on the north side of Riverview Terrace Drive.
  • School (former) Improvements - Colesburg IA
    The Civil Works Administration (CWA) conducted an improvement project at what was then the school in Colesburg, Iowa. The location and status of the facility is unknown to Living New Deal. Redecoration of the Colesburg school is nearing completion. By availing themselves of CWA help, school officials have succeeded in redecorating 65,000 square feet of walls and ceiling and 4,000 square feet of floor space in an addition at an estimated cost to the district of $250. The older section of the school is receiving a partial redecoration. ... Two hundred gallons of paint will be used.

    The Public Works Administration funded a 5-room addition to the Spanish-styled Jonestown school building, originally constructed c. 1918-1922. The project was W1151, approved 11/14/1935 for a loan of $7,000 and grant of $5,727. Contract was awarded 1/14/1936, construction begun 4.7.1936, and completed 7/16/1936. Final total cost was $13,146. Architects were N. W. Overstreet and A. H. Town. Contractor was B. W. Crawford of Clarksdale. Work was completed by laborers from the Jonestown Relief Rolls.   • School Addition - Laurel MT
    Big Timber Pioneer reported that an $18,000 grant was made to "school district No. 7 of Yellowstone county for building school additions" in Laurel. The school in question was most likely what was then Laurel High School at 410 Colorado Avenue, which opened in 1908. That building now houses Laurel School District Administration offices.
  • School Addition - Maben MS
    A new $52,900 addition was added to the school at Maben in 1938. Approximately 52 men were employed in the project designed by architects Overstreet and Town. The Board of Trustees for the school contributed materials. In June 1938, request had been made for $33,000 from PWA, which was not awarded. Funding was secured from WPA. A fire in 1953 destroyed almost half of the school including most of the new addition.
