    The Public Works Administration (PWA) provided a grant that covered about half the cost of building a new high school in Paonia CO in 1938-39.  The school closed when a new high school was constructed in the neighboring town of Hotchkiss to serve Paonia and surrounding small towns in Delta County.     Paradise Elementary School was constructed with the help of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which was very active in Butte County, CA. (Smith 2012) Unfortunately, the school burned in the catastrophic Camp Fire of November 2018, which destroyed most of the town of Paradise. (Chico Record)
  • Paris High School (former) - Paris MO
    This high school was constructed after the previous high school burned in 1934 with $26,200 contributed by the federal government.  The bleachers and wall around the football field east of the school were a CCC project.
  • Park School - Mill Valley CA
    Mill Valley's Park School was originally constructed in 1906. The PWA significantly expanded the school in 1939: “A school bond issue ($55,000) was passed in 1938, which permitted the securing of $45,000 already pledged by the Public Works Administration (PWA). The school board hired Walter C. Falch, who designed Mill Valley City Hall as the architect for the project. Peter Sartorio proposed the winning bid of $86,759 for the construction contract.     The WPA terraced and landscaped the school grounds, and constructed playgrounds, fences, and bleachers. The statue of the globe shown below was also built in 1936 and may well have been a New Deal addition.
  • Parker High School Auditorium - Greenville SC
    Wikipedia: "Parker High School Auditorium is a historic high school auditorium located at Greenville, South Carolina. It was built in 1938 with funding provided by the Works Progress Administration. It is a Classical Revival style 7,500-square-foot rectangular brick building with a front gabled roof. Speaking with a facility member, he regretfully informed this researcher that the tennis courts had been removed about 9 years ago for the building of a new gymnasium.

  • Parsons High School (former) - Parsons WV
    Built circa 1938, the Parsons High School was project number 1252-F of the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works. It stopped being a high school around 1981, but it didn’t stop serving the community. Today, it provides space for the Tucker County Board of Education, the Tucker County Family Resources Network, and the Tucker County Historical Society.

    Two buildings were constructed by the PWA on the campus of what was then the Patti Welder High School in 1936 and 1939 to serve as the town's junior high. This part of the campus was originally known as the Victoria Junior High School, but the whole campus was later renamed the Patti Welder Junior High School, and eventually, the Patti Welder Middle School.     The Public Works Administration (PWA) funded the construction of a new high school in Payson, Utah, replacing the original school built in 1913.  That school building was, in turn, replaced by a new Payson High School in 1967.

  • Penelope Rural High School, Dist. 8 - Penelope TX
    The Works Progress Administration built the Penelope Rural High School, School Dist. 8. The one-story brick building bearing white cement decorations at the top was completed in 1940. It houses eight classrooms, a gym-auditorium, offices, storerooms, and a locker room.
  • Penns Grove Middle School - Penns Grove NJ
    The middle school was built as Penns Grove High School in 1934-6 as a PWA (Public Works Administration) project and has undergone numerous repairs in recent years. Because of its unique architecture, the school was listed by Preservation New Jersey as one of the 10 most endangered historic places in New Jersey in 2011. The PWA supplied a $230,000 loan and $83,061 grant for the project, whose total cost was $312,159. The building served as the high school until the current high school on Harding Highway was built.     Peru's Central School building was developed during the Great Depression.   • Piedmont Avenue Elementary School - Oakland CA
    The old Piedmont Elementary School burned on July 24, 1938.  Federal aid was sought for building a new school, which was dedicated April 12, 1941. This Art Deco school building is complete with auditorium, library, kindergarten classroom, kitchen, offices, and regular classrooms. There is also a WPA sidewalk marker in front of the school.
  • Piedmont Elementary School Gymnasium - Piedmont MO
    This auditorium and gymnasium space was added to the backside of the Piedmont Elementary School by the Works Progress Administration. It features extensive native rock work, similar to that of the Carter County Courthouse in nearby Van Buren.

There had been three previous efforts to replace temporary buildings at schools in Piedmont in the 1920s, because about one-third of Piedmont students were being taught in temporary buildings (derisively called ‘shacks’ by the locals).   • Pierce High School - Arbuckle CA
    The Public Works Administration (PWA) provided funding for Pierce HS in the Pierce Joint Unified School District in Colusa County CA.  Both the High School and the District still exist. Pierce High School was completed in 1937 and provides a fine example of Moderne (Art Deco) architecture, which was popular from 1925 to 1945.   The Works Progress Administration (WPA) did additional work on the school grounds, building handball and tennis courts and adding fencing and a sidewalk.

  • Pierre Van Cortlandt School - Croton-on-Hudson NY
    The Pierre Van Cortlandt School was completed and opened in January 1940. The school was built as a Public Works Administration (PWA) project, a New Deal progream established under Franklin Roosevelt. The building has some beautiful artwork, including a stone relief on the grand staircase, sculptures on the gymnasium walls, and a stunning stained glass window. The stained glass window depicts a sailboat that appears to be floating on the actual Hudson river. The artwork was done under the auspices of the Federal Art Project.
  • Pilgrim Father's Hall Demolition - West Hartford CT
    In 1933/4 the federal Civil Works Administration (C.W.A.) funded the labor for demolition of the aging Pilgrim Father's Hall school, on New Park Avenue, in West Hartford, Connecticut. The exact location of the building is unknown to Living New Deal.
  • Pinedale School (demolished) - Pinedale WY
    "Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs helped the community... Additional aid came when the Works Progress Administration provided funds that ... supplied the labor for a new brick schoolhouse." Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) documents show that the school was constructed as a P.W.A. project, P.W.A. Docket No. WY 1028, with construction occurring in 1938. Located south of the Sublette County Courthouse, the building served as a school from 1937 to 1987. The building has since been demolished.
