"The Multnomah County Poor Farm in Troutdale was built in 1911 to replace Multnomah County's first home for the destitute, the Hillside Farm in Portland's West Hills. The latter institution, which housed the poor, ill, and disabled, was inspected in the fall of 1910 by a coalition of members from Portland charitable organizations who declared the crumbling building and its deplorable conditions to be disgraceful. That spurred Multnomah County Commissioners to hasten work on a progressive new institution at Troutdale intended to help the poor become self-sufficient through farming. Throughout the 1930s, CCC and WPA crews made extensive improvements to the already popular Minnehaha Park, site of Minnehaha Falls. Federal workers built impressive stone retaining walls throughout the 170-acre park, staircases from the upper park down to the creek, and bridges, all from native limestone. Improvements have since been made to the park, including a Pergola Garden and most recently a river overlook and playground area. The stonework has remained largely intact, and the park continues to draw a steady stream of both locals and tourists.

"Built in 1940 by the WPA, this building remains a "Community Building" today. There's nothing more fun than driving through a small Oklahoma town, rounding a corner, and "discovering" a WPA-constructed building. In Oklahoma, a great many are built out of the red native sandstone. This Community Building is built of rusticated natural stone which projects unevenly, giving it an appealing look. The East Walpole post office was constructed in 1939-1940. The mural "Early Paper Making," painted by George Kanelous, was installed above the Postmaster's door in 1941.

The contract to build the Millbury post office was awarded to the Daniel Cunningham Construction Company on March 15, 1940.  The project was to be completed within 270 calendar days at a cost of $54,353.00.  Groundbreaking occurred at the end of April and construction was completed in late October.  The building officially opened on January 27, 1941 with postmaster James L. Ivory. The walls and ceiling are constructed of steel and are reinforced with stone and concrete.  The basement contains a large room that was originally constructed as a bomb shelter. This former post office building was constructed by the Treasury in 1937. It is now privately owned. The post office originally contained a Section of Fine Arts mural entitled "A Massachusetts Countryside" painted by Jean Watson in 1940. "The mural was removed from the old post office in 1986 when a new one was completed. It hung in the town hall until 1990 but during renovations of the town hall was actually placed in the trash by the contractors. The president of the historical society saved the mural from the trash and has stored the mural in the attic of his shop...

What is now the Palmer Alaska Historic District was founded in 1935 as the Matanuska Colony Project. It was one of 100 New Deal resettlement programs and involved major efforts by FERA* and the Resettlement Administration. The town site of Palmer expanded rapidly with the relocation of 203 colonists from Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin in 1935 under the Relocation project.  Prior to that the area was composed of homesteads primarily. This 1935 Colony House was built as part of the New Deal resettlement program that brought colonists from Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin to Palmer Alaska in 1935. The building has recently been restored and accepted to the National Register of Historic Places. It is also the recent Recipient of the 2013 Alaska Association for Historic Preservation Award of Excellence.
