Description

The historic Bangor post office was constructed in 1939-40 with Treasury Department funds. The gorgeous brick building, which houses an example of New Deal artwork, is still in service. As of 2018 the lobby retains its original lighting fixtures.

Per The Morning Call, Allentown, Pennsylvania, Jan. 19, 1940:

Public inspection of Bangor’s new postoffice will be held Saturday night, Jan. 27, Postmaster Arthur R. Cramer announced Thursday. Formal dedication of the $61,500 structure, however, will be deferred until outdoor ceremonies can held in the spring.

Erected the with postmaster aid of the Public administration, the one-story brick building, 87 by 55 feet, stands on a lot 130 by 130 feet, at the corner of S. 1st and Chestnut Sts. Total cost of the project is $107,000. Full occupancy of the structure by the Bangor office force is anticipated by Feb. 1, and now awaits only the arrival of a few pieces of delayed equipment before the transfer can be completed. All new equipment is being used.
