I grew up in the house across the street from the Village Hall in McKinley. Where the door on the left is now, there used to be a large garage door, for the garage that housed the village fire truck. The front steps led up to the main entry foyer. Straight ahead was the room used for village council meetings, as well as “court” back when there were Justices of the Peace in MN….my dad was one for a long time. In the rear of the building, accessible by the staircase on the right side, was Minnesota’s smallest public library! Most exciting for me was the large room in the basement of the building, where wedding receptions, baby and wedding showers, anniversary parties, family reunions, etc etc, were held. There’s a little “bar” and a kitchen where the “Mckinley Ladies” often catered these occasions! My grandpa, Anton Purkat, as well as many other men of that age were WPA workers who built the village hall. My grandparents thought that Roosevelt was god.
