Description
Sirrine Stadium, in Greenville, South Carolina, was constructed with the assistance of federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds in 1936. The stadium, as of 2014, was last renovated in 2002.
Greenville schools:
“Sirrine Stadium has a long and rich history of tradition in the Greenville Community. Once the home of the Furman University Paladins, it also supported the Greenville Senior High School Raiders. Fall weekend nights and afternoons around Sirrine Stadium have been filled with the noise and hoopla of football for generations of Greenvillians. The efforts to preserve this center of cultural and athletic tradition have culminated in a outstanding center for future enjoyment.”
Wikipedia:
“It was used by Furman University’s American football team from 1936 to 1980. It has a seating capacity of 15,000. It is currently used by the Greenville High School Red Raiders and in the last couple of years the HBCU Classic.”
The PWA provided a $49,000 loan and $40,090 grant for the construction project. Construction took exactly eight months, beginning Mar. 2, 1936 with completion on Nov. 2, 1936. The final cost of the stadium was $87,011.
