High School (former) Improvements – Mattoon IL

Description

The federal Civil Works Administration (CWA) improved Mattoon, Illinois’s old high school ca. 1933-4. A CWA document photo is captioned: “A crew of painters refinishing exposed exterior wood work on a high school in Mattoon.” The exact location and present status of the facility in question is unknown to Living New Deal.

    This building was demolished in 2006. It was located on 22nd St. between Western Ave & Prairie Ave. After the new high school was built in 1956, it became the Jr. High School. Years later, it became the school board office and housed special education. Thank you for the great photo.
