Public Historian Glory-June Greiff writes from Indiana:
“The Works Progress Administration (WPA), authorized in 1935, put the Depression-era unemployed to work on public projects. Their legacy is visible in Kimmell and Gregg parks in Vincennes, Indiana. On Friday, April 29, 2-3:30, our bus and walking tour visits a variety of WPA projects, including shelter houses, a band shell (see image), and even a football stadium. We’ll look at the preservation issues these places present, and the interpretation of this fascinating part of American architectural history. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. Pre-registration required.”
Ms. Greiff wrote the National Register nominations for both Kimmell and Gregg parks–so rest assured that you’ll be in good hands. The tour is part of the “Preserving Historic Places: Indiana’s Statewide Preservation Conference,” held in Vincennes on April 27-29. For details on registration and schedule, see the conference website.
