  • Concord Road Improvements - Sudbury MA
Town Report, 1934: "We call your attention to several E.R.A. projects which have materially affected the appearance and condition of out town. The elimination of the open culverts on Concord Road have greatly improved the general appearance and also relieved the town of a serious condition caused by their danger to traffic."

  • Richmond Township School - Richmond RI
The New Deal funded the construction of this school, now Richmond Elementary, in Richmond Township in 1934.
  • Fort Peck Theatre - Fort Peck MT
The Fort Peck Theatre was part of the larger Fort Peck Dam construction project, funded by the New Deal’s Public Works Administration (PWA) and carried out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1933-1940. The theatre itself was constructed by the C.F. Haglin company in 1934, but it's unclear who designed its chalet-style appearance - the Haglin company, the Corps of Engineers, or both. The theatre’s construction is sometimes credited to the WPA, but the theatre was built and opened well before the WPA’s existence (PWA projects are frequently misattributed to the WPA, and vice versa). The New Deal's stimulus spending and construction...
  • Fish Hatchery - American Falls ID
The CCC and WPA were involved in the creation of a fish hatchery at American Falls in 1934. From the Idaho Museum of Natural History: "The Hatchery was built circa 1934 in a cooperative effort by the State of Idaho and the Civilian Conservation Corps, a federal program; and is maintained by the State of Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Three full time employees live year round at the hatchery providing 24 hour on call services to prevent fatal catastrophes. Both state and private sources provide funding via fishing license revenues and donations. This module provides information about the...
  • USS Mohawk Coast Guard Cutter - Fort Myers FL
This is an unusual entry. The PWA assisted in the construction of the USS Mohawk, a Coast Guard cutter launched at Wilmington, Delaware. After World War II, the ship was sold to various parties, and served briefly as a museum at Staten Island before being sunk off the coast of Florida in 2012 as an artificial reef. It is now the USS Mohawk CGC Veterans Memorial Reef, a popular diving destination.
  • Road Construction - La Cañada Flintridge CA
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) men stationed at Camp Angeles Crest F-133 in La Cañada Flintridge, CA, built a road in Angeles National Forest between 1933 and 1934. Its precise location is unclear.
  • Northside School (demolished) Gym - Rock Hill SC
"The Civil Works Administration and the Federal Emergency Relief Administration funded the construction of a stadium dedicated at Northside School in September 1934." The former Northside School and the gym have since been demolished.
  • City Center (former School Building) - Moab UT
The present Moab City Center, effectively the City Hall, was originally built to house the Moab elementary school and the Grand County high school.  It was built with a federal grant and cost $135,000.  It was first proposed in May 1933, according to local newspaper reports, and dedicated in December 1934. Firmage (1996, p. 275) claims that it was built with Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds, but this appears to be a classic confusion between the Public Works Administration (PWA) and the WPA – which did not yet exist in 1933-34. PWA funded the neighboring Carbon County Courthouse, so it is likely that...
  • Road and Culvert Development - Pinedale WY
During its brief life in the winter of 1933-34, the Civil Works Administration (CWA) hired unemployed workers to improve the streets of Pinedale, Wyoming, with drainage works and gravel surfaces. According to Michael Cassity (2012) the work included: "streets of town graveled, streets drained, culverts replaced, ten new culverts built."
