The runway was built by under a New Deal project in 1934, with the main hanger being built by another New Deal project, the National Youth Administration, in 1941. The site was eventually replaced by a newer airport two miles to the west due to concerns about takeoff and landing clearance as a result of the growth of the industrial park nearby.
