• City Hall - South Charleston WV
    South Charleston's historic City Hall was constructed between Nov. 1938 and Jul. 1939 with the aid of federal Public Works Administration (PWA) funds. The PWA supplied a grant of $18,818 for the project, whose total cost was $46,923. The building, which is still in service, is located at the western corner of the intersection of 4th Ave. and D St. The architect of record was Francis George Davidson. PWA Docket No. WV X1192.

    The Works Progress Administration completed improvements and repairs for the Edison School in South Charleston. The work consisted of “Painting and repairing Edison school, installing new fire escape.”

    The Federal Works Agency built the Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston. Like most functioning hospitals, Thomas Memorial Hospital has grown since its original construction, eliminating much of the original design and materials. The footprint of the building can be seen in a 1958 topographic map as an H shape, later morphing and expanding to cover much of the property, including altering some side streets.     The Works Progress Administration built the Oakes Field in South Charleston in 1939. The western edge of the stadium shares a common boundary with the former US Naval Ordinance plant. The field has an entrance to residential areas at 4th Avenue on the east center field and to the south through a stone wall with a gatehouse.     The Public Works Administration funded the construction of the Oakes Field House (former Recreation Building) in South Charleston in 1939. The Recreation Building, as it was called in 1939, is a two-story brick building with gable and seven bays facing 3rd street. The central three bays have arched doorways evocative of Palladian windows. The building is about 72 feet wide and 115 feet long with a small one-story raised brick structure extending towards the Oakes Field.
