  • Park Road 4 - Burnet TX
    Park Road 4 is a 15.5-mile, two-lane scenic parkway that extends west from U.S. Highway 281 and terminates at State Highway 29 to the west of Burnet. It travels through Longhorn Cavern State Park and skirts the eastern edge of Inks Lake State Park. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed the first several miles were in the mid-1930s to provide visitor access to the newly renovated Longhorn Cavern State Park. This part of the campus was originally known as the Victoria Junior High School, but the whole campus was later renamed the Patti Welder Junior High School, and eventually, the Patti Welder Middle School.     Several projects at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University) were undertaken with New Deal assistance. "An extensive paving program was also started with New Deal funds of $10,500." Begun in 1934, this most likely involved the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (F.E.R.A.).

    The Works Progress Administration built the Penelope Rural High School, School Dist. 8. The one-story brick building bearing white cement decorations at the top was completed in 1940. It houses eight classrooms, a gym-auditorium, offices, storerooms, and a locker room.
  • Pettus-Mineral Farm-to-Market Road Improvements - Pettus TX
    Before the State of Texas built its first numbered Farm to Market Road in 1941, the 8.8 miles of Farm to Market Road 623 between Pettus and Mineral was logically referred to as the Pettus-Mineral Road. In 1939, the Works Progress Administration improved the road by straightening curves, widening the road to 20 feet, laying a caliche base and paving it with asphalt. The official project number was 665-66-1-171 (Work Project 12521).
  • Picnic Area, Brackenridge Park - San Antonio TX
    Between 1938 and 1940 the WPA constructed 19 concrete and stone picnic tables, benches, and fire pits in Brackenridge Park. They are nestled among the trees along Tuleta Drive, just south of the Joske Pavilion. The concrete pads and stone water fountains were added at a later date.

The Hall is 71’ wide and 121’ long with a “barrel” roof concealed by stone façade on its front side.     The mural "Ranchers of the Panhandle Fighting Prairie Fire with Skinned Steer," painted by Frank Mechau in 1940, was created for what was then the post office in Brownfield, Texas.     Polytechnic High School was built in 1936-37 by the PWA. The architect was Joseph R. Pelich and the cost was $483,000. The WPA landscaped the original 18.5 acre campus. The school's mascot is the Fighting Parrots--there's a parrot on the weathervane!

    "In January 1929 the Brownsville Navigation District was organized to secure a channel up the Rio Grande, 100 feet wide and 25 feet deep from the Gulf to a port near Brownsville. Work was started at the mouth of the channel in December 1933 and the entire project, including the terminal facilities, was substantially completed in August 1937. The project consisted of heavy rock jetties, a dredged channel 16 3/4 miles long leading to a turning basin 7 1/2 miles from the city of Brownsville, a concrete wharf, transit sheds, a separate oil dock, and rail and highway connections....

  • Possum Kingdom State Park - Caddo TX
    With financing from the Works Progress Administration, the Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation District (now the Brazos River Authority) completed Morris Sheppard Dam in 1941 creating Possum Kingdom Reservoir. The district transferred 6,969 acres of land to the State of Texas for parks around the lake. The original plans by the state included east and west units of Possum Kingdom State Park on opposite shorelines. Designers abandoned the east unit and focused on the west side. Civilian Conservation Company (CCC) Corps 2888 arrived in May 1941 and began work. The CCC enrollees provided utilities and basic services. They cleared the park...
  • Possum Kingdom Stone Arch Bridge - Graford TX
    The 18-span stone arch bridge, just below the Morris Shepherd dam on Lake Possum Kingdom, is the longest and most substantial masonry arch bridge in Texas. The design was chosen to withstand flood waters released from the dam a mile above the bridge. It is built from over 7,200 cubic yards of locally quarried limestone. The bridge was built by 74 skilled workers and 250 unskilled workers. Many of the stonemasons were former coal miners. Cushman said, "designers juxtaposed an ancient engineering design with a modern concrete dam to create one of the state's greatest achievements in landscape construction." The...
