• Fire Island Shore Work - Big Timber MT
    Big Timber's Pioneer newspaper reported that the "riprapping of Firemen's island" was one of several projects in the community that was attributable to the New Deal (and in this instance, the WPA). Work on this project commenced November 1935. Riprapping refers to the formation of breakwaters or other structures using loose stones. It is possible that the project was undertaken to mitigate erosion in the area. Modern references make no reference to "Firemen's Island;" Fire Island borders the Boulder River south of Big Timber.
  • Fourth Avenue Grading - Big Timber MT
    Big Timber's Pioneer newspaper reported in 1936 that the "grading of Fourth avenue" was one of several projects in the community that was attributable to the New Deal.
  • Melville Road Improvements - Big Timber MT
    The Big Timber Pioneer newspaper reported: "A crew of 16 WPA workers, E. H. Ellingson foreman, started last week on improvement of the Settlement road, leading west from Melville. It was one of the worst roads in the county when bad, and when the work is complete it will carry a gravel surface." The road leading west from Melville, Route 371, is now known as Melville Road.
  • Mountain View Cemetery Improvements - Big Timber MT
    Big Timber's Pioneer newspaper reported in 1936 that the "improvement of Mountain View cemetery" southwest of town was one of several completed projects in the community that was attributable to the New Deal.
  • Municipal Waterworks - Big Timber MT
    Big Timber Pioneer reported in 1934 that the town of Big Timber had obtained sizable PWA funds toward the construction of a $140,000 "water works system." In January 1936, the paper reported that the project had been completed at a cost of $147,000.
  • School Ground Improvements - Big Timber MT
    Big Timber Pioneer reported in October 1935 that the WPA allocated $1,500 for "park improvement in school district No. 1, Big Timber" -- that is, school ground improvements at what is now the abandoned site of the former (1905) high school at the northern corner of West 4th Ave. and Hooper St.
  • U.S. Route 191 Improvements - Big Timber MT
    Montana's Big Timber Pioneer newspaper reported in 1937: "Emery C. Jones, foreman, Arne Hoem, timekeeper, left Monday morning with an additional camp outfit for Wheeler creek, where a crew of 14 PWA men will do improvement work on the highway leading to Melville. A camp has been established at the old Finstead ranch, this side of the Wheeler creek bridge beyond Ten Mile creek." Tenmile Creek and Wheeler Creek cross U.S. 191 11 and 14 miles north of Big Timber, respectively.
  • Yellowstone Avenue - Big Timber MT
    Big Timber's Pioneer newspaper reported in 1936 that the "completion of Yellowstone Trail through town" was one among several projects in the community that was attributable to the New Deal. The road, which today remains paved only in parts, is now known as Yellowstone Avenue.
