• Armory - Yazoo City MS
    The armory for Yazoo City was funded by the WPA with a projected cost of $52,000. Located on the corner of Jackson Avenue and Twelfth Street, it was intended for use as the armory, auditorium, and other public use. The monolithic concrete building was designed by architect N. W. Overstreet. The city provided about $20,000 through the bond sales for their contribution. Harris & Knowles was awarded contract for reinforcing steel, H. L. White Lumber Company for the lumber, and W. H. Johnston for electrical work. Lack of available WPA labor and materials shortages resulted in a delay of completion....
  • County Jail - Yazoo City MS
    The Yazoo County Jail was constructed as PWA Mississippi project 1087 with funding of $20,450 toward the $35,000 cost. J. R. Flint Construction Company built the new jail south of the City Hall on South Washington Street. R. W. Naef was architect. Decatur Iron & Steel Company of Alabama were recommended to provide the ironwork for cell construction. The new brick building was described as "modern", escape proof and fire-proof, and had individual cells with lavatory, toilet, shower bath, "and a good bed" (Yazool jail is now occupied, 1937, p. 1). The jail was demolished in 1998.
  • High School Improvements - Yazoo City MS
    Yazoo City's 1917 high school was renovated and a new annex built in 1938-1939 with funding from PWA. A grant of $46,227 was provided toward a total cost of $159,427. At 84% completion, the cost was $89,831. The project was approved as PWA x1322 9/7/1938 and construction began 12/9/1938. It was completed 11/20/1939. The annex addition added a gymnasium, dressing rooms, 600 spectator seats, ten new classrooms including a band room, industrial arts workshop, and home economics department.
