• Elementary School - Ripley MS
    Public Works Administration (PWA) project 1280 provided a grant of $16,411 for construction of a grammar school. Architect E. L. Malvaney designed the 1-story brick school. The Daily Clarion-Ledger reported both the high school and the elementary school were constructed with this grant. The project was approved 8/10/1938, construction started 11/21/1938, and the project was completed 10/28/1939 for a total of $35,074. WPA provided an additional $3,640 for the grammar school to add landscaping, playground equipment, and sidewalks in February 1940.
  • Peoples Consolidated School - Ripley MS
    Public Works Administration (PWA) project 1254 was for the Peoples Consolidated School. A loan in the amount of $1550 and grant for $4745 was approved 8/12/1937. Construction began 12/14/1937 and was completed 5/31/1938 for a total cost of $10,952.
  • Post Office (former) - Ripley MS
    The 1939 Colonial Revival-style post office was rehabilitated in 1999 and now privately owned; as of 2014 it was home to a communications company, though no longer. The company received a Heritage Award for Excellence in the rehabilitation of the historic building. It formerly contained bas relief sculptures by George Aarons. The sculptures were moved to the new post office at its completion.
  • Post Office Sculptures - Ripley MS
    George Aarons' three cast stone reliefs, "Development of the Postal Service," were installed in 1939 in the then-new (and now former) Ripley, Mississippi post office. They were moved to the new post office in 1999 and installed on the back work room floor. As of 2014, access is "happily granted by the employees" (newdealartregistry.org).
  • Shady Grove School - Ripley MS
    Located in rural Tippah County, about 5 miles west of Ripley, the Shady Grove School was constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1936.
  • Waterworks System - Ripley MS
    Public Works Administration (PWA) project 7312 for Ripley’s waterworks system was approved June 20, 1934 for a loan of $51,500 and a grant of $17,135. Construction was started 11/15/1935 and completed 11/5/1937. Ripley proposed to issue revenue bonds in order to obtain the loan/grant to purchase a private system, with the town operating it as a municipal plant. However, it was challenged in a lawsuit, by a local taxpayer and only after reaching the Mississippi State Supreme Court was the validity of the town issuance of the bonds affirmed.
