  • United States Post Office - Zeeland MI
    Anchoring downtown Zeeland, the new one-story 60 by 70 foot post office was built for $68,000. Construction was completed in just seven months, tapping into a pool of unemployed workers available during the New Deal Era. Although the population of Zeeland at that time did not justify such a large post office, Zeeland was then home to 60 hatcheries, shipping up to 13 million live chicks and turkey poults to farmers per year, by rail and through the postal service. The post office opened on December 2, 1935.

  • University of Michigan - Ann Arbor MI
    The University of Michigan, like numerous public universities around the country, received substantial financial assistance from federal Public Works Administration (PWA) during the Great Depression. Several buildings were constructed on the university's campus as a result of federal grants, including the Victor Vaughan Dormitory; East and West Quadrangles; Stockwell Hall; Kellogg Institute; and the University Health Service Building. Each of these structures is still in use today.

  • WPA Historic Markers - Mackinac Island MI
    "On Mackinac Island, several WPA engravers created incredibly detailed, two-sided oak signs showing scenes of the island's heritage." Hand-carved, many were created for placement outside the island's historic buildings. After decades of decay, Carpenter Dale Gensman rescued seven signs from disposal and undertook a multi-year project to restore them. According to the Oakland Press, "each sign stands about 3.5-feet-tall, 2.5-feet wide and weighs almost 300-pounds." As of 2017 the remaining seven signs, since restored, can be found at four different sites on the island, one in use and six on display:  in front of the Mackinac Island Courthouse;  on display at the Stuart House City Museum;...
  • Zeeland City Hall - Zeeland MI
    This building allowed all city functions to be carried out in a single location for the first time, and included a council meeting room, a large public meeting room, a police station with jail cell, and city offices. This was the first public building built under the Civil Works Administration in Ottawa County.
