Dover-Foxcroft Sites

When the Civil Works Administration (CWA) was launched in November 1933, the Old Dover Village Cemetery received improvements. According to community notes in the Bangor Daily News, "road grading and widening at the Dover Cemetery, and construction of a new piece of road leading to the Bassett section."

The Dover-Foxcroft post office is a simple brick colonial-revival building, completed in 1937.  It contains a fine mural by Barrie Barstow Greenbie.  It is still functioning as a post office.

The Dover-Foxcroft post office features this mural, "River Driving", by Barrie Barstow Greenbie (1920-1988). Greenbie was trained at the Corcoran School of Art in New York, and this was his first job.  Painted in 1940, it made Greenbie possibly the youngest artist ever commissioned by the Work Projects Administration (WPA), according to a University of Massachusetts website entry on his life.  However, it is more likely that the mural was painted under the auspices of the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, not the WPA.  

As part of the initial Civil Works Administration (CWA) jobs effort in Dover Foxcroft was the construction of 4 sewer lines on Fairview, Morton, Harrison Avenues and Pearl St. $12,618 was spent by the CWA and 90 men were put to work in the town in December on various public works.
