Hatfield Sites

In 1934, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (F.E.R.A.) furnished the cost of labor for the construction of a playground behind Center School in Hatfield, Massachusetts. The 35-man project cost the Town of Hatfield only the price of materials for the project ($982), while the federal government paid for the labor (3,028). The Center School itself was constructed as Hatfield's middle school in 1914. The building much later became the Western Massachusetts Regional Library and, as of 2016, has been vacant for about 10 years. It appears that the playground was demolished at some point as the aerial view of the site shows...

The federal Civil Works Administration (C.W.A.) and Federal Emergency Relief Administration (F.E.R.A.) furnished the cost of labor for the construction of a dike in Hatfield, Massachusetts. The project was started Nov. 29, 1933 by the C.W.A. Grading, loaming, and seeding work continued under F.E.R.A. and was completed Sept. 15, 1034 Dozens of men were employed; the C.W.A. paid $9,203.55 for the labor and F.E.R.A. $1,245. The Town of Hatfield supplied only the cost of materials for the project, a small fraction of the total cost.

One sewer collected runoff from Main Street and poured it into the Connecticut River nearby. The 25-man project cost the Town of Hatfield supplied only the price of materials for the project. Work occurred between Oct. 13 and Nov. 15, 1934.

Town Report: "With the help of WPA funds, we have done some work at the reservoir this summer. The exact facilities in question and locations of the five schools is not presently known to Living New Deal.

The Town of Hatfield supplied only $169.45, the cost of materials for the project.
