Miami Beach Sites

Originally the Miami Beach Public Library & Art Center, this building was designed by Russell Pancoast in 1930. FERA later completed the interiors of the rooms on the ground floor.

Flamingo Park, also known as Flamingo Field, was a ballpark built in 1925. In 1935, new grandstands were built by FERA. The ballpark served a number of professional baseball teams for many years, but eventually became rundown, and was replaced by a new ballpark on the same site in 1967.

Lummus Park is a beach-side park stretching along the Eastern side of Ocean Dr. from 5th - 15th streets. Under FERA projects 13-129: 13-B3-146, federal workers built 8 new shuffleboard courts and a new concrete-floored pavilion. The park was renovated in the 1980s. The shuffleboard courts are no longer there. It is unknown to the Living New Deal whether the pavilion is still extant or not.

"The Miami Beach Post Office is a historic 1937 Art Moderne U.S. Post Office building in Miami Beach, Florida designed by Howard Lovewell Cheney." The historic building, which houses examples of New Deal artwork, was constructed with historic Treasury Department funds.

The historic Miami Beach post office houses three New Deal murals depicting "Episodes from the History of Florida" painted in 1940 by WPA artist Charles Russell Hardman. (The federal agency that commissioned the works was the Treasury Section of Fine Arts.) "The lobby is a round and in the center is a fountain that appears to be inoperable.
