• Garfield Elementary School - Selma CA
    The Public Works Administration (PWA) constructed this Art Deco style building in the small town of Selma. The bronze plaque specifies that was project No. Calif. 1493-1-DS. The architect, W. D. Coates, also designed the Reedley Junior College for the PWA.

    The Selma, California post office was constructed with federal funds. The building was completed in 1937 and is still in use today.
  • Post Office Mural - Selma CA
    The oil-on-canvas mural "Land of Irrigation," by Norman Chamberlain, was installed at the Selma Post Office on March 24, 1938. Before beginning the piece, Chamberlain traveled to Selma to get a sense of the local community. Local newspaper editor Lowell Pratt Clark took him for a tour of the surrounding countryside, including a visit to a local peach cannery. The final work reflected the town's agricultural economy, in particular irrigated peach and grape production. Chamberlain was paid $1500 for the work.

    According to a March 8 1934 article in the Clovis Independent, out of $17,374 for 17 Civil Works Administration projects for Fresno County, $3,649.96 was spent "for a sewer distribution line in Selma."
