    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) improved a segment of Branch Avenue SE, from Pennsylvania Avenue to Randall Circle. This WPA project was described as follows: “This project requires heavy grading and eventual temporary roadway treatment. At the present time, grading has been completed to the extent of 40 percent. When completed, it will join with the permanently improved portion of Branch Avenue, south of Pennsylvania Avenue and this will form a direct route into southern Maryland.   • Skyland Drive Improvements - Washington DC
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) improved a segment of Skyland Drive, from Twenty-fifth Street to Wagner Place. WPA workers graded this road, and also “placed old broken concrete and Macadam, for a depth of approximately seven inches, as a base source. This material was then rolled and covered with a bituminous material by maintenance forces The completion of formed a necessary adjunct to the large private development in this vicinity.”
  • Todd County Fairgrounds grandstand - Long Prairie MN
    The Todd County Fairgrounds Grandstand was constructed in 1940. It was the largest Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in the county. The workers began pouring concrete in the spring. The grandstand was a labor-intensive effort. The size of the work crew was doubled in May 1940 to ensure a portion of the grandstand would be done in time for the August fair. The workers spent hours and hours in hard, hand labor. The workers poured cement for six steps at a time, working from dawn to late evening.   • Camp Conley: Ammunition Magazine and Ground Improvements - Point Pleasant WV
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) built ammunition magazine and made ground improvements to the Camp Conley in Point Pleasant WV. "In 1940, the Works Progress Administration built a new ammunition magazine, modernized the buildings and grounds, and constructed tent floors. " (McDaniel, "Camp Conley") It is possible that this is the site of the 1957 armory at Ohio River Road and University Lane. True extant is unknown.  
  • Pacific Terrace Sidewalks - Klamath Falls OR
    Two 'WPA 1940' stampings are located in concrete sidewalks along the NE side of Pacific Terrace. One stamping exists on the the block between Melrose and Portland Streets. An even better-quality WPA stamping can be seen at the corner of Del Moro St and Pacific Terrace which also includes a stamping of 'Pacific Terrace' nearby. Multiple original sections of WPA sidewalks survive along the NE side of Pacific Terrace between Melrose and Van Ness Streets.
  • Main Street Improvements - Riverside CA
    Along Main Street, between 1st and Poplar exist a small number of concrete curb stops located at asphalted, angled parking stalls that flow directly from the roadway heading north. These curb stops were part of a WPA street improvement project in 1940. The southbound lane along Main Street also contained angled parking stalls but have recently been converted to vertical parking lanes and the original concrete curb stops removed.
  • Rural Housing - Lee County MS
    The first Mississippi county approved for rural housing loans from the United States Housing Authority was Lee County. Loans represented 90% of the construction and 10% was locally supplied for the $790,000 program. "America's first 'economy wall' unit of brick residences have been completed under direction of the rural housing authority on Highway 78, three miles east of Tupelo..." (Housing Work, 1941). D. D.   • Camp Pratt - Columbus MS
    The City of Columbus was awarded $8,821 for WPA project 41048 for improvements to Camp Pratt recreation center. The summer camp facility constructed a swimming pool, keeper's house, and remodeled camp houses, using 27 workers for 6 months. The city of Columbus supplied the materials. The 70-acre site was sold in 2018 with the agreement the city could continue to use it for summer camp.
  • Jefferson Davis County Courthouse Improvements - Prentiss MS
    WPA project 41146 approved $19,859 for "new construction, enlargement, alteration, and improvement of the building, including addition of paintings, installing of plumbing and electric facilities and other operating equipments and appurtenances to perform incidental and appurtenant work" (Half Million, 1940, p. 15). Smith and Norwood were selected to construct a "complete modernization program of the Jeff Davis county courthouse"(To Remodel, 1940, p. 6) with construction beginning May 1940.
  • Grammar School - Fulton MS
    The Fulton Grammar School was completed in 1940 with a WPA grant, following the loss of the old grammar school by fire in April. The one story brick school was designed by architect J. B. Lawson. Containing 19 rooms, the school housed a library, music room, kindergarten, office, and a 550-seat auditorium. WPA provided funds between $48,008-$74,590. The school closed in 1999, was named a Mississippi Landmark in 2001 and received grant money in the amount of $168,000 from the Mississippi Arts Commission and $75,000 from the Community Heritage Preservation foundation for renovations.
