  • Biloxi High School Athletic Field - Biloxi MS
    The new athletic field commenced development in 1940, prior to beginning the new Junior High in 1942. The $17,000 project included "grading, drainage and fencing of the new field" (Daily Herald, January 1, 1940). It included a playing field, three practice fields, and a quarter mile track. The field was used for the first time by Biloxi High School vs. Moss Point on September 17, 1941 (Biloxi will use new school field).
  • West Scranton Post Office - Scranton PA
    The historic West Scranton Branch post office building of Scranton, Pennsylvania was constructed with federal Treasury Department funds. The building, which possesses a New Deal mural in the lobby, is still in use today.
  • Federal Building (demolished) - Rison AR
    This two-story Art Deco building adjacent to Cleveland County courthouse was built by the WPA in 1940. It was listed on National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and removed in 2005, apparently when it was demolished. The Cleveland Historical Society intended to refurbish the building as a museum, but was unable to raise the required funds within the designated time.
  • Shakamak State Park: Service Building - Jasonville IN
    The service building was completed by CCC workers in 1941.
  • Beekman Town Hall - Beekman NY
    This striking stone building was constructed by the WPA in 1940-42. As one local history site explains: "On August 2, 1940 the Town Board offered a resolution which was unanimously carried to hold a special election at the Sylvan Grange Hall in Beekmanville on the 24th of August. The resolution was to erected and construct on its lot in Poughquag a Town Hall and building for town purposes at an expense not to exceed $ 23,000 of which  $8,000 is to be contributed by the Town of Beekman and the Balance by the W.P.A. The town would issue a $1,000 bond...
  • Oakhurst and Elizabeth Dorr Schools Arcade Sidewalks - Clarksdale MS
    At a cost of approximately $6,000, "...an extensive arcade system of walkways" was completed at the two schools in Clarksdale (Arcade sidewalks, p. 1).
  • Delta Experiment Station Improvements - Stoneville MS
    $107,000 was approved in the WPA project no. 41003 for the Delta Station Forest Tract for fire lanes, roadways, and general improvements. The Experiment Station purpose was experimental work in lowland forest types. Henry Parker, of Grenada, Mississippi was the project supervisor in charge of "clearing and grubbing roadways and firebreaks (WPA Project, p. 1)...road construction and bridge building; manufacture of lumber for bridges; and stand-improvement work under the supervision of state and federal foresters" (p. 5).
  • Sheep-Harney Elementary School - Elizabeth City NC
    Sheep-Harney Elementary School was built in 1940 as a project of the Works Projects Administration. It was constructed on the site of an earlier school as S.L. Sheep Junior High School, and named for an educational leader in Elizabeth City. It is a building noted for its exceptional Art Deco details.
  • Norwalk Transit District Murals - Norwalk CT
    Artist Arthur Gibson Hull painted a series of murals depicting the travels of Marco Polo, including: "Africa," "China," "India," "Venice, the Musicians" and "Venice, the Ship." The murals were originally installedin 1940-41 at the Norwalk High School, with funding from the WPA Federal Art Project. They were restored in 1986 and are now located in the Norwalk Transit District building.  
  • Clinton Federal Building: Kirishjian Murals - Washington DC
    The Clinton Federal Building (north) was originally the US Post Office Department headquarters, completed under the New Deal in 1934.  It contains a wealth of New Deal artworks commissioned and paid for by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts – 25 murals and 22 sculptural elements (12 bas-reliefs, 2 statues, 8 wood medallions) – featuring postal themes. In 1940, Vahe Kirishjian painted 8 ceiling panels for the Law Library in the Post Office Department, four large (13 x 21') and four smaller, called "The Four Seasons and Signs of the Zodiac."
