  • Legation Street NW Construction - Washington DC
    In 1940, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) built a new roadway at 30th Street, Military Road, and Legation Street in the district's northwest quadrant. It is not clear which road was new, but probably Legation Street.  This project was part of a massive New Deal program of street paving and upgrades around the city of Washington DC.  Most such work is invisible today beneath subsequent repavings.
  • Bellevue Magazine: Buildings and Roadway - Washington DC
    In 1940, the Washington Post reported allocation of funding to the Works Progress Administration (WPA) for improvements to naval facilities in the city's southeast quadrant: "A group of 685 men working on an additional ammunition depot and buildings for the United States Naval Research Laboratory at Bellevue, a naval torpedo station in Alexandria, Va., and storage facilities at the Navy Yard proper for ordnance and improvement of all utility facilities. Cost, $400,000."   • National Guard Armory (former) Addition - Duluth MN
    Duluth's National Guard Armory, built in 1915, received a significant expansion through the Works Progress Administration on the eve of World War II. Minnesota's WPA administrator, Sidney L. Stolte, announced the plans to "increase the size of the building, provide new meeting rooms, and extend the stage easterly" in the fall of 1940. Architect Philip C. Bettenberg drew up the plans. Bettenberg had already designed armories throughout Minnesota, including those in Minneapolis and Brainerd. The cornerstone has been hidden or obliterated during the addition of a ramp, but there is a local landmark plaque put up by the City of Golden. It is a simple single-story building in a Classical Moderne style with a green metal roof.     The federal Work Projects Administration (WPA) constructed a half-mile storm sewer along Grand Avenue in Poughkeepsie, New York, from north of Fulton Ave. to a creek south of College Ave.
