  • Howard University: Chemistry Building - Washington DC
    The Public Works Administration (PWA) provided $1,018,811 for a chemistry building at Howard University.  It was one of four buildings funded by PWA on the campus, including the Founders Library, built c. 1937-38. The chemistry building was built in brick Georgian style, with limestone trim. It was almost surely designed by Albert I. Cassell, an African American architect who did several of the buildings at Howard.  It still serves as the home of the Department of Chemistry.  
  • Golden Gate Bridge: Doyle Drive Approach (demolished) - San Francisco CA
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed the Doyle Drive approach to the Golden Gate Bridge (not itself a New Deal project).  This roadway carried traffic from city streets in the Marina District through the Presidio of San Francisco, which at the time was still a U.S. Army base and headquarters of the 6th Army.   The project included, besides the roadway itself, the carrying of underground electricity, telephone, sewer and water lines.   • Roosevelt County Courthouse - Portales NM
    Construction of the Roosevelt County Courthouse and Jail was undertaken as a New Deal project during the Great Depression. Sometimes mis-attributed to the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.), the building was actually a Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) project. The P.W.A. supplied an $89,173 grant for the building's construction; total cost of the project was $197,381. Construction occurred between 1937 and 1938/9. P.W.A. Docket No. N.M. 1024-D.S.

  • Post Office - Helper UT
    This New Deal post office was built in 1937. It remains in 'mint condition' to this day, with the interior looking exactly as it did in the 1930s (2017).  The building on is on the National Register of Historic Places (as part of the Helper Historic District) and marked with a cornerstone and a plaque. The plaque mistakenly attributes the building to the WPA, but all post offices were built by the Treasury Department at the time (as the cornerstone clearly states). It contains Jenn Magafan's 1941 mural, "Western Town," painted for the Treasury Section of Fine Arts.
  • Tennessee Supreme Court - Nashville TN
    The Public Works Administration (PWA) paid for construction of Tennessee's Supreme Court building in 1937-38.  The state's highest court had not previously had its own building, having been housed in the state capitol.  The structure also contains the....  Short and Stanley-Brown recorded in their 1939 report on PWA projects that: "Before the erection of this building the supreme court was housed in the State capitol and its offices were located in rented quarters in various parts of the city.   • Municipal Building - Crafton PA
    "The building is part two stories and basement in height and has over-all dimensions in plan of 112 by 42 feet. It houses the municipal offices, the police and fire departments. There is space for the fire apparatus and a police-car garage, reading and billiard rooms for the firemen, police hearing room, detention cells, council chamber, offices for the borough secretary and tax collector, and a room for social gatherings. The construction is fire-resistant. The exterior walls are limestone backed up with hollow tile and the floors are reinforced concrete on steel joists.     Originally constructed as a high school, what is now Eisenhower Middle School in Norristown, PA was built as a New Deal project: the Public Works Administration (PWA) provided a $487,086 grant for the project, whose total cost was $1,114,009. Construction was completed in April 1938. "The building contains 65 rooms, including shops, laboratories, music rooms, an auditorium seating 2,011 people, a cafeteria for 600, a library for 120, and 2 gymnasiums which when thrown together make a room 88 by 112 feet.   • Marine Air Terminal - Flushing NY
    Construction of New York's LaGuardia Airport was among the largest undertakings of the New Deal's Works Progress Administration (WPA) and included both today's main airport (then the "landplane field") and what is now the Marine Air Terminal (then the "seaplane division"). The airport was constructed between 1937 and 1939 and dedicated in March 1940. At the time it was among the most advanced airports in the world.
