  • Austin Hall (former; TWU) - Denton TX
    Texas Woman University's original Austin Hall was constructed with federal Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) funds. "Named after Texas hero Stephen F. Austin, the hall was constructed in 1936-37 on the site of the original "dorm row."" The building is since demolished; a building in the newer Lowry Woods Apartments complex on campus has also been given the name Austin Hall.
  • Sidewalks on Courthouse Plaza (former) - Prescott AZ
    The Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed sidewalks all over Prescott AZ, including around Courthouse Plaza.  According to the WPA stamp in the photograph, the sidewalk was part of Project No. 65-2-105 in 1936.   Unfortunately, the entire plaza has been renovated and the stamp shown here has disappeared -- despite the photographer's happiness on seeing "that such things are preserved."
  • SMUD Warehouse - Sacramento CA
    A $12,000 PWA grant allowed for the construction of a warehouse at the Sacramento Corporation Yard. It is unknown if the building exists after major reconstruction was done at the facility in 2009.
  • Galveston Causeway (replaced) - Galveston TX
    Galveston Causeway "carries traffic over Galveston Bay and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The original causeway was built in 1912 and carried both rail and auto traffic. The auto traffic was transferred to new causeways built to the west" during the late 1930s, "leaving the original bridge for rail traffic." The Depression-era structure was constructed as a Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) project from 1936 to 1938. The auto bridges have since been replaced and demolished. PWA Project No. Tex. 1968-R
  • High School (former) - East Haven CT
    The former East Haven High School was constructed as a New Deal project with federal Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) funds. The P.W.A. supplied a $185,153 grant for the project, whose total cost was $427,035. Construction occurred between March and December 1936. No longer used for educational purposes, East Haven is converting the facility into a 70-unit senior housing facility. P.W.A. Docket No. CT 1026
  • University Mound Reservoir - San Francisco CA
    An 840 x 965 ft reservoir that added 82 million gallons of storage to the existing 60 million gallon reservoir that was already on site. The reservoir is lined with 6" of reinforced concrete and the roof has 21/2" slab on concrete joists and girders, supported on circular columns spaced at 25' intervals. It was part of a $12,000,000 improvement program for the SF water supply system (the PWA-funded expansion of the Hetch Hetchy system, which included raising O’Shaughnessy Dam, the Pulgas Water Temple, and more) financed by a bond issue with the aid of a PWA grant in 1933.   • Market House / Central Fire Station Renovation - Newburyport MA
    The Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) conducted substantial modernization work to what was then Newburyport's central fire station. Originally constructed as the Market House in 1823, the building at 1 to 3 Market Square was renovated into an arts center in 1990 and now houses shops.   • ECOS Environmental Center - Springfield MA
    Now the ECOS Environmental Center, this facility by Porter Lake in Forest Park was constructed as a field house by the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) in 1936-7. It was known as the "Warming House" and was used for skating until 1970.
  • Haverhill Stadium - Haverhill MA
    WPA Bulletin, 1937: "The Haverhill Stadium, which was dedicated October 3, is the pride of the city. Every seat in the reinforced concrete stands built by the WPA is a good seat from which to watch football games on the well laid out field, which runs parallel to the stands."
  • Ice Skating Arena - Thief River Falls MN
    Built by the WPA in 1936 as an ice skating and hockey rink. The arena is still being used today, it is referred to as the "Old Thief River Falls Arena."
