    During the hard winter months of 1933-1934, the Civil Works Administration (CWA) was a work relief program that employed Portlanders on a variety of needed projects. Sewer repair work was one such project category. These men are shown doing sewer repair in the Laurelhurst neighborhood at the corner of SE Floral and SE Ankeny Streets on January 26, 1934.   • Clear Lake Cutoff & Forest Roads (Clear Lake Truck Trail) - Willamette National Forest OR
    Vehicle access within the Willamette National Forest (WNF) was quite limited in 1933. Consequently, developing truck trails or access roads was a high priority for the US Forest Service for fire management. When Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees arrived in the summer of 1933, they were immediately put to work developing a truck trail from Belknap Springs on the McKenzie Highway north to Clear Lake, and ultimately connecting to US Hwy 20 and the Santiam Highway.  Portions of those road improvements are currently maintained as forest service roads while the remainder has been improved as State Highway 126, known at the...

  • Mount Philo State Park - Charlotte VT
    The Civilian Conservation Corps carried out work at Mount Philo State Park near Charlotte VT. According to the Vermont State Park website, "In the early 1930s a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) unit was assigned to the mountain. This crew built the current access road, campground, ranger’s quarters, picnic area and summit lodge.”
  • Granite Hot Springs Swimming Pool – Bridger-Teton National Forest WY
    In 1933, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) workers stationed in the Bridger-Teton National Forest constructed the Granite Hot Springs Swimming Pool recreational site by building a deck, changing room, and campground around the natural springs. Today, the Granite Hot Springs Swimming Pool is used by tourists and Wyoming residents alike. Water temperatures range from 93° in the summer to 112° in the winter. A historical marker placed near the site describes the CCC’s work on the swimming pool. No doubt, the deck has been renovated over the years.
  • CCC Ponds Recreation Area – Pinedale WY
    In 1933, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) workers stationed at Camp Fremont in Pinedale, Wyoming built a large system of ponds for environmental and recreational purposes. Additional camp work included a variety of other projects such as reforestation, flood control, and road building. Following the closure of Camp Fremont in 1942, the CCC Ponds went out of use and became derelict. The ponds were reconstructed in the 1990s, however, and were given thematic names after resident wildlife, including the Fish Pond, Duck Pond, Beaver Pond, and Frog Pond.     The Civil Works Administration built the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington KY. According to the town budget report for 1933, the city share for the airport under CWA was $1,362 as part of a total budget of $22,427 spent in the City by the CWA. In 1946 the first commercial aircraft serve the region via a Delta Air Lines flight on a 21-passenger Douglas DC-3.     Trail Ridge Road is the main route across Rocky Mountain National Park It is a marvel of highway engineering and provides stunning views of the park, particularly as it traverses the alpine regions above timber line.
