Housing & Segregation

Many critics have accused the New Deal of causing residential segregation in America. Regrettably, the New Deal’s mortgage insurance program (FHA) helped lock in the practice of racial redlining for a generation. Yet, segregated neighborhoods were the rule before the New Deal’s housing programs were enacted and continued long after federal policies were changed in the 1960s. Indeed, segregation still plagues the country today.
