U. S. Courthouse, Western Division: Biberman Mural – Los Angeles CA

Description

This oil on canvas by Edward Biberman entitled “Los Angeles – Prehistoric and Spanish Colonial” was commissioned by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts at the time of the building’s construction. It was removed from the building when the post office moved out in 1965, but has since been restored. A second mural by Biberman, “Creative Man” is still in storage.

  1. Hello,
I am doing research on WPA artists and Los Angeles institutions where WPA art appears. I searched this site but found no reference to the murals painted on the proscenium (a camel scene) at the Shrine Auditorium.

Can you tell me the name of the artist that painted that mural?

    Thanks,
    Much appreciated

    Hello Sue.

Not all artwork is documented which is why lost art often shows up after many years. Are you sure that it was a New Deal sponsored art piece? Does it have FAP or PWAP or Federal Art Program/Project anywhere on the mural? Do you have a newspaper clipping about it? With a little searching, I located 1926 photos of the auditorium that show the mural which is before the New Deal began in 1933.
