Description

The Works Progress Administration (1939) built a sidewalk at Auburn and Harwood Avenues in East Oakland.  It was one of many sidewalks constructed by the WPA around the city.

Date stamps in sidewalks were a common practice in the first half of the 20th century.  Many are documented at oaklandunderfoot.com.

I think this might be in El Cerrito; there is the same sidewalk stamp on Humbolt and Macdonald in El Cerrito, CA 94530.

Mary, it’s likely there are additional sidewalk stamps in El Cerrito — the Bay Area is covered in them, the WPA built many of the sidewalks there. If you think to snap a photo next time you walk by, would you include it in our repository here:

  3. I saw one of these today at the Intersection of Durant Ave & Sunnyside St. in south Oakland. #sidewalkstamps on Instagram.
