Description
The Bureau of Public Roads provided funds to construct a grade separation for Newton-Sparta Road and the railroad in Andover Township, N.J. The project was undertaken as part of a larger grade crossing elimination initiative during that era.
New Jersey Board of Public Utility Commissioners: “A “Works Program-State Highway Department” project on which the Board initiated proceedings and on October 2nd, 1935, issued an order to eliminate the crossing. Contract for construction was let by the State Highway Department in August, 1936, and construction was completed in September, 1937. Funds from the Bureau of Public Roads were allotted to meet the entire cost of construction. The State shared no costs in connection with the project. “

One grade improvement to the Newton-Sparta Road (Sussex County Rt 616) still exists and is heavily used. The grade and bridge over the former Lehigh and Hudson RR replaced a grade crossing further to the north. My late Father remembered the re-alignment of the road and the construction of the grade and bridge. The eastbound grade approach contains a large quantity of rock making for a bumpy approach even today.
