I have an event to tell about the Pawnee WPA building near downtown on Highway 18, at the bottom of Standpipe Hill. As a 7 year-old in 1935, construction was underway for the building and they had trenches dug for the foundation. My brother John and sister Florence played Hide-and-Seek one evening, in the trenches. I was running as fast as I could and my head struck a tight cord stretched across the trench. Bang! It flipped me on my back, and my head must’ve dented the bottom of the trench. I saw stars (not in the sky). It made an impression that I’ve never forgotten even though that was over 80 years ago. Sorry I have no pictures.
My dad had a saying about WPA. He said it meant We Piddle Along. I believe the town uses the bldg. as a maintenance site now.
