I believe that they added that column later. There was another column just like it on the east side of the school. We used to wait by the column for school to start (until we heard the school bell ring) The Trapezoidal top was broken off on the east side.

My brothers and I went to this school in 1963. We walked to school. This was the year Pres Kennedy was assassinated. I’ll never forget getting sent home in the middle of the day due to this awful event in history. I was a first grader. Mrs Star was my teacher. When we got home we saw the story on the black and white tv. Everyone was very sad but, at the time, we were too young to comprehend what had taken place. I don’t think the school staff told us why we were getting the rest of the day off. We found out at home. We only lived in Newton a year. My dad was there planting a new Church in an old ice cream store. I’ll never forget this significant time in my life and where I was when it took place. I’m 66 now and remember it like it was yesterday.
