Description
The Works Progress Administration built the Joy Gymnasium in Wynnewood OK.
Contributor note:
“Joy is a small rural community in Murray County, Oklahoma. It got its name from the name of the school that was established when three local towns consolidated their districts. It was named Joy when that name was chosen in a 1922 student contest. This gymnasium is located on State Highway 77 at County Road 1670 (Joy Road).
The Joy Gymnasium was built in 1939 as a WPA project. It is located behind an earlier brick school which is no longer used. The school and gymnasium are in ruins today. This is a rectangular (100 x 77 ft.) rusticated and randomly laid native sandstone gym with a barrel roof. Windows along the east and west sides are 20-pane fixed casement units. There is a small wing on the west side. The roof on this wing, as well as the south elevation have flat roofs.”

I went to school there as my dad did when Carr Flat was closed. My grandfather was.one of the men who built the school. Joy was our community center, our school, our church at times and the voting center. Many votes locally and nationally were cast there. It was the gathering place for those in need. Many fundraisers were held there for families who had lost their homes to fire as well as others going through hard times. Joy will be missed but the memories will last forever.
